DAR SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
Hi, Ladies!
The summer is coming to a close and students are already
back in classrooms. It is time to think about scholarships for the coming year. I will be sending applications and facts about the various NSDAR Scholarships to area
high schools, colleges and universities, after September 1.
If you have a child or grandchild who is a high school senior
or a student who is in college, there may be a DAR scholarship available. Due
to the economy some scholarships are not being offered this year and many have restrictions as to who is eligible to apply
for those. There is one scholarship that is for students whose mother is a DAR
member. All scholarships require a sponsor letter from a DAR Chapter. I will gladly write that letter of sponsor to accompany the scholarship applications.
The OSDAR Wings of Eagles Scholarship is also available
to high school seniors. In the past, five $1000 scholarships were given
out. Due to a decline in donations to this fund, it may not be possible to give
as many awards this year. I have those application forms and this scholarship
also requires a sponsor letter. Applications can be obtained from the schools’
Guidance Departments or I can mail the information directly to you. Please contact
me if I can be of assistance.
Warm regards,
Audrey Morrison

PROJECT PATRIOT
Betty Graybill, Chairman
Betty Graybill, our Project Patriot Chairman, is collecting cancelled stamps, toiletries,
men's magazines (such as fitness or sports), Sudoku puzzles, popcorn, and other snacks. There are women in the service so
magazines that might interest them would be appropriate, also other feminine items (including feminine hygiene products),
might be appreciated. If you prefer, just send Betty a check. Money collected for troops is an excellent solution. Betty
says she has various "haunts" where she can get good deals for items to send.
She reports that we have sent 25 boxes to Iraq with 166 lbs and 1 box to Afghanistan.32 pair of sox
and 83 toiletries were delivered to the VA clinic in Canton. A total value of $115. She collected $140 at
the luncheon to use for purchases for items for the troops. She delivered 43 magazines to the McKinley Life Care
Center. Pat Stuck's Red Hat Group Rouge Chapeau helped with the last 2 boxes.
The "Sox Box" project continues. All the white sox previously collected have been delivered.
Further donations are always welcome. Members are encouraged to bring in white cotton, crew socks. These cannot
be any other color, style, or material and socks must be in unopened, original packaging. The sox are an ongoing project
in conjunction with the Blue Star Mothers. They are moms with children serving in the war with Iraq & Afghanistan. They
are distributed through our VA Hospitals locally here in OH.

The armed forces return our military to this country. They do not provide
transportation home for them It used to be that they could fly stand-by for a reasonable
rate, but most airlines have ceased to provide this service. In order to allow these deserving young
people to see their family members either immediately before or after their military service abroad,
a fund has been set up. Whether or not you are for or against the war doesn't matter. Local
military families who operate on a shoestring deserve our support. If you can donate to the cause, please
send a tax-deductible check to:

VETERANS COMMITTEE
Jayne White is our new Chairman of the Service for Veteran's Committee. She would appreciate it
if you would collect cardboard for her to use for crossword puzzles. Donations of books, playing cards, etc. would
also be appreciated. These items are sent to area veterans hospitals.
Military Note OHIO--Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland
recently signed Senate Bill 289, legislation that will establish the Ohio Department of Veterans
Services and ensure employment rights to those serving in the uniformed services. The new department will assume the
duties of the Office of Veterans Services. The duties of the current director of the Governor's Office of Veterans Services
will transfer to the new director of the department, who will serve as a member of the governor's cabinet. The legislation
also will provide employment protection for members of the uniformed services or the Ohio organized militia who must take
a leave of absence from their job to serve their country. - Canton Repository -
