PUBLICITY RELEASE

Canton Daughters of the American Revolution Acknowledged

for Fort Laurens Efforts

Bolivar, OH— The Stark County Chapter of the Ohio Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) was honored for its efforts to help rebuild Fort Laurens one log at a time.  The Friends of Fort Laurens Foundation presented Canton DAR Vice-President Kathryn Upole with its Log Sponsorship Award during the Foundation’s Annual Moccasin Roast at Fort Laurens State Memorial in Bolivar on September 26th.

“Organizations or individuals that raise in excess of $500 are eligible for this award,” said Scott Fisher, a trustee of the Friends of Fort Laurens Foundation.  “The Canton DAR Chapter has consistently provided log sponsors to help the Foundation raise the funds it needs to rebuild the only American Revolutionary War fort built in what now is the state of Ohio.  We greatly appreciate their efforts.”

John and Betty Franklin, of Hudson, OH, also received a Log Sponsorship Award.  Mr. Franklin will be the president of the Ohio Society Sons of the American Revolution in 2010.

The Foundation’s highest award, The Col. John Gibson Award, named after Fort Laurens’ first commanding officer, went to Jacque Fisher, Sr., of Bolivar for his efforts in assisting in cleaning up the Ft. Laurens grounds.  At age 78, Fisher was swinging his chain saw around and cutting down tree branches like he was 38.

A 1700’s style dinner was served to the nearly 125 attendees at the Moccasin Roast which included such menu items as roasted top round beef with Jack Daniels onion sauce and garnished with apple cinnamon, glazed walnuts and almonds, smoked pork loin with sweet chili sauce, betty salad, rolls, steamed redskin potatoes with parsley, maple corn pudding, and a black walnut cake topped with vanilla bean ice cream.

The meal was prepared by Chef Brian Sarty of Hennis Care Centre of Dover and Bolivar which sponsored the unique dinner. On-site operations for the meal were coordinated by Jacque Fisher, Jr., also from Bolivar.  “We simply could not provide the quality of food and service without Hennis Care Centre,” said Fisher.   “They are great partners with an enthusiastic  interest in early American history.”

Betty Graybill received the following letter from the Veterans Affairs, Canton Outpatient Clinic:
It is a thank you from Anne Harper, Volunteer Liaison for the donation received on July 1, 2008 of 18 pairs of white sox and toiletries.  Anne writes that they appreciate all our members have done as well as, the dedication and generosity by these donations, which have enhanced the lives of Veteran patients.

At the Flag Day Luncheon, Betty Graybill announced that she had forms for donations for Marcia Grafius, for anyone willing to contribute to a friend of Peggy Maloney ( the youngest daughter of Mary and Jim Zawacki), who would be running in a marathon race for the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society in memory of Mary.  This note reads:
Thank you so much for your generous donation to the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society race for a cure.  Every day I learn a little more about Mary.  I wish I had the privilege to know her.

My training for the marathon is going well. I'm currently running 12 miles-only 14.2 more to go!  I pray my 47 year old legs keep on running...

Thank you again for your support.  I truly appreciate it!
Marcia Grafius.

Dated June 23, 2008
From Anne Harper, Volunteer Liaison for Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Canton:

From Lori A. Shaffer, Volunteer Coordinator of McKinley Health Care Center.
Thanking Canton Chapter NSDAR "for donations of puzzles, toiletries and Reader's Digests which will come in handy for friendly visits with the residents."  Lori states that so many of the residents enjoy the larger print books, as well as the word puzzles.  She concludes with a thank you for our generosity and caring spirit.

March, 2008.  We received a thank-you note from Roberta Cook, OSDAR Scholarship Chairman, for our $50 contribution to the Wings of Eagles Scholarship.  This was in honor of Sandra Zikursh and Dennis Gressock who did not charge a fee for our February programs.  For those who may be unaware, this scholarship began with the term of past OSDAR Regent Marcia Seifert, as her project.

The note reads:
Dear Audrey,
Please inform your chapter that the $50 donation towards the "Wings of Eagles" Scholarship is tremendously appreciated.
We need to keep receiving donations so we can award these scholarships.  I notified Marcia and she is also very thankful for your generosity.
Roberta Cook
OSDAR Scholarship Chair

We also received one from Marcia Seifert as follows:
Dear Audrey,
Please convey my sincere thanks to the Canton Chapter for the generous contribution to scholarship.
Best regards-
Marcia

I received a call this morning from a man in Kent whose son was requesting DAR scholarship information.  I mailed him application and financial aid forms for both the National and the OSDAR "Wings of Eagles" scholarships.  Each application requires a sponsor letter from a DAR chapter.  Roberta Cook is our OSDAR/DAR Scholarship chairman.  Usually, Roberta will send me information and ask our chapter to sponsor a particular student.

I received this email from Roberta today, after I emailed her to give her the information on the student from Kent.  She is always thanking our chapter for our willingness to sponsor an applicant. From Roberta: Please tell your chapter for me "Thank you for your willingness to sponsor these fine young applicants.  Canton Chapter has always supported scholarship.  You exemplify what DAR represents."  Roberta

I have written four  letters of sponsorship this year, including this current request, on behalf of our Canton Chapter.

Regent, Audrey Morrison
