Constitution Celebrations

Constitution Week

“The Constitution is the guide which I never will abandon.”
George Washington

The tradition of celebrating Constitution Week was started many years ago by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law #915, on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Constitution Week is commemorated September 17 – 23. This year we will celebrate the 220th anniversary of our Constitution.

CANTON CHAPTER CELEBRATES CONSTITUTION

Canton Chapter celebrated Constitution Week 2008 with many activities. (From left in photo below) Debbie Hinton, Margaret Frost, Kay Upole, Regent Audrey Morrison, Joy Dingman, Allison Pruitt, Eleanor Cartwright, Joyce Pruitt and Angela Pruitt represented the Chapter in the 2008 Constitution Week Grand Parade in Louisville. Wearing our new DAR shirts, we rode in two beautiful 1976 Cadillac Eldorado convertibles provided by Joy's husband Morris, following our Chapter banner carried by Allison and Angela, daughters of Joyce and granddaughters of Eleanor. An estimated 8,000 people lined the streets of Louisville, known as "Constitution Town" since 1952, to see the parade that featured more than 150 units. The crowd enjoyed the red, white and blue-wrapped candy we threw to the children.

Chapter members set up displays at the Stark County District Library, both the main library and the Lake Community Branch, and at the libraries in North Canton and East Canton. The Governor of Ohio sent a proclamation, and our Congressman, Ralph Regula, sent a letter about Constitution Week. The Chapter will be featured on a local radio station on September 30 for a reflection on Constitution Week, as well as a discussion of our organization and our Chapter's 100th anniversary celebration.

Mrs. Morrison, together with Dr. Judith Edwards, Carolyn Elsass, Jill Elsass, Vivian Geltz, Ruth Springer and prospective member Dorie Yonally attended the 2008 Stark County Constitution Luncheon on Saturday, September 20, at the Alliance Country Club, sponsored by Great Trail Chapter. The featured speaker was 61st District State Rep. Mark Okey, who is a member of SAR.
