CANTON AND GREAT TRAIL CHAPTERS DEDICATE GRAVE MARKER
by Joy Dingman
A cold, windy, rainy day couldn't dampen the spirits of the 58 people gathered to honor the memory of Revolutionary
War Soldier Philip Farber on Saturday, October 1, at the Farber-Knotts Cemetery in Magnolia, just two days from the 254th
anniversary of his birth in New Jersey. He died in 1831 in Tuscarawas County. Canton Chapter and Great Trail Chapter of Minerva
co-sponsored the placement and dedication of a bronze marker at his grave. In attendance were descendants
of Pvt. Farber, the Brigade of the American Revolution Northwest Department Re-enactors from Fort Laurens, members of
the Sandy Valley American Legion, SAR members, State Representative Mark D. Okey (who is a member of John Stark Chapter SAR),
members of Canton and Great Trail Chapters, and OSDAR officers. Shown in the photo (from left) State Regent Sharlene Shoaf,
Northeast District Director Rose McIntyre, State Chaplain Jan Augenstein, Great Trail Chapter Regent Kim Lewis, Canton Chapter
Regent Kay Upole, and State Organizing Secretary Nancy Wright,

DEDICATION CEREMONY
By Joy Dingman
On August 16, 2008, eighty years after the OSDAR placed a plaque at Fort Laurens State Memorial, members
of Canton Chapter DAR, John Stark Chapter SAR, and Col. George Stewart Society C.A.R. gathered at the park to plant an American
Elm tree in honor of the soldiers of the Revolution who served at the Fort; the trustees and citizens who strive to keep the
historic fort open; and the organizers, founders and members of Canton Chapter on the occasion of the Chapter's 100th anniversary.
The American Elm was among the first symbols of freedom for the United States because it was
the Liberty Tree that served as a rallying point for the Sons of Liberty in Boston. British soldiers cut it down in August
1775. Millions of American Elm trees fell victim to disease, including many at Fort Laurens, dating from the period
that the Fort was active. Disease-resistant elms have recently been developed and it is hoped that the historic
species will come back.
Built in 1778, Fort Laurens is the only Revolutionary War fort in Ohio. [See the Fort Laurens
page on our Web site.]
Following the tree planting and dedication ceremony, everyone enjoyed a potluck picnic.
A special guest was Ohio Society Children of the American Revolution President Alex Muetzel.
