Our contest winners included one national-level winner, Allison Antram, a freshman at Jackson High School, who placed first
in the national context for her short story, "Free at Last." Allison Mundhane, a senior at Jackson, placed first in the East
Central Division for her poem titled "Red, White and Blue instead of Green."
Four students took first place in the state level contests: Karoline Conway, a fifth-grade student from Sacred Heart of
Mary School in the poetry category; Nicole Thompson, a fifth-grade student from Sacred Heart of Mary in the stamp design category;
Kelly Peters, a seventh-grade student from Sacred Heart of Mary, in the stamp design category; Stephani Dumphy, a home-schooled
student in the ninth grade, in the poster category.
Six students, all from Sacred Heart of Mary School, took second place at the state level: sixth-grader Rachel Speakman
in the poster category; sixth-grader Sylvia Rossi, seventh-grader Tori Reeves, and eighth-grader Molly Reichard in the poetry
category; eighth-grade student Eddie Reeves in the stamp design category; and eighth-grader Adam Tesch in the poster category.
Placing second at the Chapter level was Megan Troyer, a sixth-grade student at Sacred Heart of Mary School, in the poster
category.
Taking Honorable Mention at the Chapter level were Amanda Gordon, a senior at Jackson High School, for her poem, and Robyn
King, a seventh-grade student at Lake Middle School, for her stamp design.
Receiving special recognition was the sixth-grade class of Sacred Heart of Mary School, with 12 students who entered the
contests

CITIZEN AWARDS
Recognized as Everyday Heroes for their patriotic service at a ceremony at the May 6 Chapter meeting

Betty Graybill recognized our 2009 "Everyday Heroes" at an awards ceremony at our May 6 Chapter meeting at the
First Baptist Church of Canton. Two of these heroes were our own DAR members DeFrance Thomas and Betty Loudon for providing
puzzles and magazines to veterans in nursing homes.
Also recognized was the 2008 Stark County Veteran of the Year, Charles Seifer, for his service at the U.S. Department
of Veterans Affairs Canton Outpatient Clinic, where he has volunteered four hours a day, five days a week, for seven years.
Others included the Mineral City American Legion, which mailed 7,000 packages to more than 2,200 soldiers; high school seniors
Dustin Carneal and David Peters, Jr., who collected and mailed more than 2,000 books to a mission school in Tanzania; the
Life Teen Youth Group at St. Paul's Catholic Church in North Canton, who collected more than 2,200 items for the Stark County
Hunger Task Force; and seven staff members of Hartville, Uniontown, and Lake Elementary Schools who directed students in a
project to send handmade cards and care packages to our troops overseas
