Flag Day Luncheons

CANTON CHAPTER
FLAG DAY LUNCHEON - 2010

 Wednesday, June 2nd.

The Flag Day luncheon was well attended and included several guests as we welcomed our OSDAR Regent Patsy Johnson Gaines and our OSDAR Chaplain Doris Gorgas.  Mrs. Gorgas led the chapter in our Opening Ritual and also installed the slate of officers for 2010-2013.  Mrs. Gaines gave us her portrayal of Caroline Scott Harrison, which was informative, interesting and sometimes humorous.

Two certificates of awards were presented and signed by our state regent.  Jean Henderson Douglas was awarded for her 40 years of membership in NSDAR and Eleanor Daghir Kear was awarded for 25 years of membership.

Our flag award was presented to Wendell and Barbara Rinehart, 504 Hillcrest Avenue NW, North Canton.  Wendell suffered a stroke in 1999 and was unable to be with us to accept the award.  He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from August 1948 until his retirement on July 1, 1969.  He and his wife, the former Barbara Southall moved to North Canton where Wendell went to work for the Hoover Company.  As members of Faith United Methodist Church in North Canton, Wendell provides the American flag which flies from the flag pole on the east side of the church at the corner of Hillcrest NW and 9th Street NW.

At their 2008 Flag Day luncheon at Brookside Country Club, Canton Chapter Regent Audrey Morrison, assisted by First Vice Regent Kay Upole, presented a very special American Flag and a Certificate of Award to Mr. James Kessler for the flag display at his home in Canton. The display includes an American flag on a 15-foot pole, together with flags of the State of Ohio, the United States Army and POW-MIA, all flown 24 hours a day with proper lighting. Mr. Kessler is a Vietnam veteran and the son of a World War II veteran who was a prisoner of war.  The flag was personally signed on September 11, 2007, at the Ground Zero site in New York by the designer of the 50-star flag, Robert Heft, who is from Lancaster, Ohio.  The presentation included Mr. Heft's history of how President Eisenhower selected his design. He was a 17- year-old high school student when he designed the flag.
