A SCOTTISH CELEBRATION OF SPRING
The 4th Annual Brigadoon Beltane Festival
(Formerly the Celtic Beltane Festival)
The Scottish American Society is sponsoring its fourth annual Brigadoon Beltane Festival on Saturday the 31st
of May 2008 at Maize Valley Market & Winery, 6193 Edison Street NE (State Route 619) just
east of Hartville, Ohio. The Brigadoon Festival formerly held in Burton is no longer a part of their program, so we are incorporating
it into ours. Festival opens at 10 a.m. Welcoming ceremony is at noon, closing ceremony begins at 5:00 in the evening. The Gleann
Mòr pipe band and the Akron and District pipe band will perform. Admission cost is 8 and under free - over age 8 will
be $6.00 - $20 for family. No genetic testing.
This is the fourth year for the festival and it is bigger and better than ever. There are highland athletic
events (including caber tossing - the caber being a close relative to our telephone pole) and a strong man competition. Traditional
music from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales will be featured via bands and through
J & C Entertainment. Highland cattle will be there to be admired, the Vikings will be re-enacting their
invasion of Scotland, and Highland soldiers may be seen strolling the grounds. Many vendors will be selling goods of all kinds.
A basket raffle will also be featured, with all proceeds going to Pegasus.
The Welsh Country Dancers from Columbus will perform and teach their traditional dances. The award winning
Tigh Na Creige Highland Dance Group will present traditional highland dance, and the Heather Belles will perform more contemporary
highland dance routines. Scottish Country Dancers from Kent, Ohio will demonstrate dances anyone can easily learn. There will
also be story tellers, Celtic harpers, a demonstration of “waulking” the wool, sheep shearing, traditional food
and beverages at reasonable cost, wine tasting for the adults, and a book sale area.
A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Pegasus, an association dedicated to horseback
riding therapy for those who are disabled or handicapped. For more information on Pegasus, see their web site at: www.pegasusfarm.org
