This celebration of purple martins and their contributions to the Portage Lakes & environs will be held once again this year.
Bring your kiddies and friends to learn about learn about the Martins.  Witness and hold the baby birds and learn how to feed the Martins with scrambled eggs.  This is a unique and very enjoyable way to introduce environmental concerns to the public.

The event happens rain or shine.  Either way, there's plenty to see and learn.

Once again, the Martinfest was a resounding success.  With the weather predictions looking dire, we debated about cancelling our event, but in the end the ever intrepid Larry Hunter inspired us to set up anyhow and we were sure glad we did.  We counted at least 100 kind souls who braved the elements to attend. It was our first Martinfest since officially being recognized as "Purple Martin Capital of Ohio" last December.  Frank LaRose, Marilyn Slaby, and Anthony DeVitis are the legislators that helped us achieve this goal.  Our thanks once again to these folks.

Except for one short deluge, the weather gods were good to us. Those who attended had a wonderful time flinging scrambled eggs into the air and watching the Martins catch them, seeing the eggs and baby Martins, and carrying the babies to an area where they could be examined for parasites.

Visitors could examine exhibits and ask questions of the representatives of Ohio Department of Natural Resources. A craft table was well used by attending children.

Buckeye Martinfest is sponsored by the Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association.  The association was formed in 2000 to attract the birds and help control insects in the Portage Lakes which in turn helps to reduce the use of insecticides that pollute the air and water.  In fact, at one of our past festivals, a local resident said that he wanted to thank our club because after living in his home for 25 years, he and his wife are finally able to enjoy their deck in the evening without being plagued by bugs.

Thanks to all those members who worked hard to achieve this success, including: Larry Hunter, Paul Toth (president of the association), Judy Hunter, Kay Lukac, Carol Saurer, Bev & Tom Fry, Betty & Chuck Seeley, Jim & Margaret Frost, Liz & Dave Belvin, Rosemary Donatell, Phil Pinnow and all the other willing hands who helped.

Congratulations to Larry Hunter and the entire Purple Martin gang - plus thanks to the exhibitors who also participated.  Cleveland Metro Parks, Akron Library, ODNR Division of Natural Areas and Preserves.

It was a day of information and lots of fun for all.

Buckeye Martinfest is sponsored by the Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association.  The association was formed in 2000 to attract the birds and help control insects in the Portage Lakes and reduce the use of insecticides that pollute the air and water.

What a SUPER EVENT !!!  Over 200 attendees.  Everyone had a wonderful time flinging scrambled eggs into the air and watching the Martins catch them, seeing the eggs and baby Martins and carrying the older babies to be banded.  This year we had several table top displays which greatly added to the carnival atmosphere.  We want to thank Pat Rydquist and Mike Johnson, MetroParks serving Summit County, Ann Bugeda, Lakes Metro Parks, Jim Seikel, Park Manager, Portage Lakes State Park, Cheryl Luck, Akron Public Library, Jim and Margaret Frost, Ohio’s Natural Areas and Preserves Association, and our bird bander, Dan Best.  PLPMA members Chuck and Betty Seeley, Paul Toth. Leonard Borden, Jean Broida, Larry Hunter and others pitched in to make this the best BUCKEYE MARTINFEST ever.

During the meet and greet, a resident of the west shore of North Reservoir said that he wanted to thank our club because after living in his home for 25 years, he and his wife have for the last 5 years been able to enjoy their deck in the evening without being plagued by bugs.  Another testimonial that our program works.  We can use birds to control excess insect populations.
