Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association
MINUTES
January 18th 2011
The meeting was called to order by president,
Paul Toth, at Rose Villa due to scheduling conflict with Kiwanis.
Those
in attendance:
Paul Toth, Betty and Chuck Seeley, Mary Starbuck,
Sarah Matheny, Tom Fry, Jim and Margaret Frost, and Judy and Larry Hunter.
Minutes
No minutes from previous meeting were available.
Treasurer’s
report:
$6068.52 in checking account. Club got $3900 for boat rides.
Expenses of $600 for intern for 2010.
Approx. $350 for newsletters.
Betty moved, Judy seconded that treasurer’s
report be accepted. Passed.
Old
Business:
Larry showed the 2010 record of Martin sites. Information compiled by the intern and will be sent to the Purple Martin Conservation
Association.
Larry did 4 or 5 talks on Purple Martins in
2010.
The Buckeye Martin Fest 2010 was cosponsored
by Summit County Metro Parks. 80 plus people participated. August involved pontoon boat rides on Nimisila to see pre migratory roost.
We continue to try to get Portage
Lakes declared the Purple Martin Capital of Ohio.
Sarah, from Metro Parks, emphasized how important
Martins are for insect control, and informed us that bat populations are decreasing due to white nose bat syndrome –
a fungus killing bats.
New
Business:
Larry passed around information about Scout
Martin’s progress. Currently in Southern Georgia and Florida.
Larry also informed us that the Portage Lakes
Disc Golf Association has put a picture of a Purple Martin on their discs.
Larry moved and Margaret seconded that $2250
be allocated for 3 new poles at $750 each, one at New State Park and 2 at the State Mill super site. Passed.
Margaret moved and Chuck seconded that $750
be allocated for 6 tree swallow houses, 2 at Nimisila and 4 at New State Park around the butterfly trail. Passed.
Betty moved and Chuck seconded that $600 be
allocated for 2011 intern. Dr. Gregory Smith posts the Intern position at Akron U. job site
bulletin. Passed.
Larry moved and Margaret seconded that we rent
Paul Toth’s revamped boat trailer, so we can move poles and Martin sites, for $150 a year. Passed.
Jim moved and Chuck seconded that we donate
$200 to Kiwanis for the use of the Kiwanis Civic
Center for 2011 Buckeye Purple Martin Fest. Passed.
Judy moved and Jim seconded that we allocate
up to $200 egg money for supplementary feedings. Passed.
Volunteers
for Site Monitors
Job:
To check Martin sites weekly, clean out sparrow nests, record number of nests, eggs and babies.
Total:
30 poles with up to 12 gourds per pole.
Sites 1, 2, 3 are private sites. Site 6, retired, owner deceased. No site 13.
Sites 4,5,11, 19 – monitored by Larry
Hunter
Sites 7, 8, 9,10,16,17,18,31,32 are at State
Mill. Club monitors, including Paul Toth and Larry Hunter
Sites 12, 28 – Glenn Sheets
Sites 25, 26, 27 = the spillway. Coventry H.S. students
Site 14 – Tom and Polly Price
Site 20 – Y Noah. Larry Hunter

Newsletter
Jim Frost will do the 2011 newsletters.
Bird
Banding
Sarah and Chuck volunteered to assist with
bird banding. This will start around June 15th.
Club
Dates
March
27, 2 P.M. – State Mill. Set up site for 2011 season. Install two new poles.
April
10, 2 P.M. – New State Park Butterfly Trail. Install 10 tree swallow houses.
June
18th, 2 P.M. – boy scouts help with banding.
June
25th, Buckeye Martin Fest with Metro Parks.
1-2
P.M. Registration at Kiwanis Civic Center, Portage Lakes Drive. Displays.
2 P.M. State Mill site. Observe
and band Martins. Metro parks will provide tents and chairs.

be closed and slate accepted. Passed.
