We need help; it will be 8 weeks this Saturday since Nicolas was taken from us all.
Nothing has yet been done to this man who has not had a drivers license in 17 years. He was driving a van that was not capable of stopping, there were skid marks over a hundred feet before he actually hit Nicolas. His beautiful body was thrown 38 feet, only to be run over again. How fast was this Maniac driving down our little residential street?
To make things worse if that's possible, the man had false tags on the van, it wasn't registered, and he of course didn't have insurance, and had an open bottle of beer in his vehicle. You would think a blood test or a Breathalyzer would have been ordered, but No, this man was aloud to walk home.
His neighbors have told us that the man who destroyed my life is a known alcoholic, and always has beer in his vehicle. The officers at the scene decided that because the beer was warm and it was only 10:00a.m. It had probably been left in the vehicle from a previous occasion.
A couple of weeks after Nicolas's Death, I came home to find four Florida State Highway Patrol standing on the side of the road where my Angel lost his life, scratching their heads (their words exactly), they could not understand how this man could of hit Nicolas, he had on bright clothing, nothing obstructed his view, he obviously had to of seen the kids playing by the side of the road.
After doing a simple background search, I found out that he has numerous prior drug charges, DWI's and many recent traffic violations.
I believe that the reason my son lost his life is because this man was on some type of drugs, and has absolutely no regard for the laws we are all required to obey. He has been able to get away with breaking the law for so long, that nothing stops him.
I am so frustrated with the way this is being handled, every time I speak with the Highway Patrol, I am told they are waiting for more reports, and that it seems unlikely that this man will face any serious changes. How can this be? I believe someone made a serious mistake in handling this from the very beginning. I've been afraid to say too much because I don't want to make the wrong person mad, but enough is enough, I don't care now, My Angel is gone and nothing is going to shut me up. Things need to be changed, and I can't do it alone. I need people to speak up. Does anyone have any advise for me? Who else can I contact? Please help me, we are all out there on the streets, our children play outside, and The Piece of Evil that took Nicolas's life is still on our streets, buying his beer from our local Jiffy Store.
Help me to get something done, who knows, maybe we can stop another tragedy from happening if these people are held accountable for their actions.
We are just getting started on Nicolas' s website, it's still so unreal to me. I do want something good to come from this tragedy. With The Slow Down For Nicolas Fund we have set up, we want all donations to benefit neighborhoods were children are present. There are big yellow Slow Down for Children signs at Lowe's and Home Depot that we are looking at; I think they would look great under posted speed limit signs. What about lowering speed limits in “ Kid Zones,” it's usually 15 Miles per hour in School Zones. If enough families request a lowered speed limit, how do we get it changed? Something's just make so much sense to me, why does it have to be so complicated to get things done.
Please contact me with and any recommendations, we are new at this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Update
10/29/2003
I just wanted to let everyone know what has been going on since I last added to Nicolas's website.
First of all, I was reassured by the Florida State Highway Patrol that they are doing everything they can to bring this man to justice, and that the case is now in the hands of the State's Attorneys Office. I just need this man off of our streets; unfortunately it's a slow process.
Here are some things I've been working on. I found a program called Keep Kids Alive Drive 25. Their website is
http://www.keepkidsalive.com/.
It seems to make sense to me. It basically brings awareness to all drivers in residential areas. I have bumper stickers, refrigerator magnets and brochures on the program. The best thing they have are street signs with the logo Keep Kids Alive Drive 25. The signs are the same size as regular street signs. They really stand out though, and I truly believe they will help. The signs cost over $50 dollars apiece, plus shipping. If I can order 100 at a time, I only have to pay $40 dollars each, with shipping included. I've already raised about $1400.00, plus I've got people coming up with all kinds of ideas on how we can raise more. I know this is going to work. I know that once we get the first 100 signs out there, people are going to start coming forward to help, and to find out how to get the signs in their areas.
I e-mailed the mayor of Ormond, Fred Costello, and I received a wonderful response from him. He contacted quite a few people for me, and the response has been great. I'm going to try to meet with him personally, and talk to him about my ideas. I have to say, there are a lot of good people out there. I don't know if it's because this involves a child, but through my tragedy, a lot of kind people have come into my life, most of them I know were already here.
So that's just a small update. I know there is a lot more to just putting up 100 streets signs in Volusia County. I know it won't happen overnight, but something good is going to come out of this. It's going to take time, but I promised my Angel that I'll spend the rest of my life doing what I can to help our children, and that will be a promise I vow to keep.
Also, I just want to thank the people who are behind me with this, I can't do this alone, and I know that our children are our main concerns in life, because believe me when something happens to your child, nothing matters, not your bills, you're broken down car, petty fighting, nothing! God, family and friends, that's what life is about.
Sincerely
Marie Anderson
