Academic Program

The Hill School's principal academic goal is to instill in each student the capacity and desire to learn. The School maintains a student-faculty ratio of approximately 7:1 and an average class size of 11 students.

Sixteen academic credits in grades 9 through 12 are required to earn a diploma, and the distribution of courses includes no fewer than 4 in English (four years), 3 in mathematics, 3 in one foreign language (or 2 in each of two languages), U.S. history, a laboratory science (biology, chemistry, or physics), and a course in the arts as well as in theology or philosophy. Foreign language offerings include 6 years of Latin, 5 years of Spanish and French, and 4 years of German and Greek. In fall 1997, the School will offer the first year of Chinese Mandarin. An additional year of Mandarin will be added in each of the next three years. Ancient and medieval, European, and modern European history; U.S. Civil War, World War II, and Vietnam history; History of Minorities; economics; and other electives are offered within the Department of History. Mathematics 8, algebra I and II, geometry, analysis, analytic geometry, calculus, and advanced topics are offered in the Department of Mathematics. Science courses available to all students include 2 years of biology, 2 years of chemistry, 2 years of physics, 2 years of computer science, and other electives.
