INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Sennen "ON LINE PARISH CLERK". web page. This site is for everyone to enjoy as well as being  a tool to help Genealogist, Historians, and others carrying out research.  Our aim is to provide information from an historical viewpoint on Sennen which is in  Cornwall and the most westerly parish in the United Kingdom.  We will endeavor to provide a number of resources here to help you with your research whilst at the same time hoping that you will share your knowledge with others through the site.  We would also welcome constructive comment and suggestions on how we can improve its content.

We have transcribed the Parish records for the years 1700 onwards for you to browse and we are planning to add more in the future. Within 24 hours of the site going on line we had the most amazing offer from Margaret Owens * in Australia. Margaret told us that she had transcribed the marriage details onto the Excel spreadsheet from several records which she has and that we could put these online. This was great news and meant that George and I could now concentrate on transcribing other records.

Margaret like me has joined the On Line Parish Clerk Project as the  OPC for St. Just in Penwith & Pendeen.  She hopes eventually to put everything she has on those 2 parishes onto a web site.

Well George and I are grateful to Margaret and her group for saving us a lot of hard work. We  also want to thank Joan in Colorado for sending us the information which has helped to set up two other pages. The first on  Sennen Strays and the second on the Trade Directory for Sennen in 1919. We have added further directory pages. Di Donohue undertook the task of transcribing later Baptisms, Marriages & Burials which has meant that the records on the site go to the end of the 19th Century. To all of them, Thanks.

If you have any records for the parish which you would be willing to place on the site please contact me. george<at>penhalvean.freeserve.co.uk. Cut and paste the address into your browser replacing <at> with @ . This has been done in order to  stop some of the span we recieve.

Sandra is a Vingoe by birth and descendents of the Vingoe family can trace their occupation of Lands End back to the 16th Century when a Nicholl Vyngow is shown on the Muster Roll. In tracing the Vingoe family tree we have collected a lot of information on both the parish and its people. But this site is about all the people who lived and worked in the Parish which is far more than  just the Lands End, The families who in the past lived and worked in Sennen tended to be multi-skilled Farmer / Fishermen, with a touch of Mining thrown in.  If you had visited the parish in the 1600's you would have found sheep and goats by the thousands grazing the land. However one thing is certain it was a hard life and the frequent crop failures meant that Smuggling was also part of their trade, and sometimes this led to a Hanging. All this and more you will find on the site so please browse away as it will give you an insight as to how your ancestors lived. If you are researching your family and believe they came from the Sennen Parish then please get in touch if you need help. If they came from another Parish in Cornwall then follow the link at the bottom of the Contents page.  You can also find other Web sites with a Sennen interest on the Links Page

Note *

Margaret Owen is the Secretary of the Cornish Association of Victoria Inc., Australia, and also the Convener of the St.Just District Research Group, a group within the CAV. St Just is an adjoining Parish to Sennen and  Margaret and her friend Alison, who is the Editor/Research Officer of the Group, and have been gathering records for many years. She tells me that:

" It costs nothing to join the Group, but there is a small charge for research and photocopying expenses.  Our aim is to put people, researching the same names, in the same areas, in touch with one another. Our area includes all of the parishes of West Penwith, and go out as far as Marazion, St. Hilary and Perranuthnoe."

You can find a link to the group HERE.
