TAMPA CHAVEROT~~JEWISH LESBIANS of TAMPA BAY!!
About Us

Our "Her-story".........

Tampa Chaverot became a reality in March, 2003, when a local woman sat with her Rabbi and told him she was gay.  Having been married to a man for many years, with children, she was experiencing all of the typical pains of coming out, and then some.  She was thinking that perhaps a group of Jewish Lesbians might prove to be very supportive.  Rabbi Shimon Moch, himself an out gay man, thought the idea was wonderful, but was sad to inform the woman that there was no such group.........and so, Tampa Chaverot was born.  "Chaverot" is the plural form of the Hebrew word "chavera" which means "girlfriend." Twelve womyn attended our first meeting.......today we have over 80 womyn on our mailing list, some from as far away as Orlando and Miami, with more inquiring every day.  We are not only the only Jewish Lesbians group in our area, but we are in fact the ONLY such group in all of Florida!!!

DID YOU KNOW.........

In Europe after World War II, General Dwight D. Eisenhower told his clerk, WAC Sergeant Johnnie Phelps, that he'd heard rumors there were lesbians in the WAC battalion and asked her to prepare a list naming them so he could discharge them. Phelps bravely told Ike that she'd do as he asked, but that her name would be at the top of the list. A more junior clerk then spoke up saying, "Begging the general's pardon, but my name will be above Sgt. Phelps' because I'll be typing it."Realizing he'd be getting rid of most of his file clerks, typists, and a large share of his headquarters' support staff, Eisenhower withdrew the order.
