Dogs' .lives .are .too .short.. Their .only .fault, .really."

Blondel was struck by a car and killed on Wednesday afternoon,October 1, 1997.
He had lived with us a short five months and was about a year old when he died.

We first saw him sitting at the side of a country road one afternoon. As I drove down
the same road on my way to work the next morning, he was still sitting there but
now it was raining and nearly fifteen hours later. It didn't look as if he had moved
from that spot the whole time.

When I stopped the car and opened the door, he came over to sniff my hand and
I took him by the collar and he willingly entered the car. The first thing he then
did was to shake himself off, spraying the inside of my new car with muddy droplets.

Blondel was a good natured scalawag, always ready to play with
any of the other dogs who were willing. He was the only one to pay
any attention to our elderly, nearly blind Cairn terrier mix, Bobby,
who would often trot after him like a little kid brother.

He was an accomplished escape artist and was easily able to scramble over
six foot chain link fencing, an act that would eventually lead to his death.
