The city of Temple, Texas, every year sponsors an event to celebrate their history, which is deeply rooted in Railroad history. I was there September 9, 2000, along with several of my friends and we were able to document a lot of the activity in photos. This page and subsequent pages will show the magnificent work that has been completed by the wonderful people of Temple.
The event is two days long, with a model railroad show at the City's convention center North of town on I-35. There was also a lot of activity at the newly restored Santa Fe station in downtown. This year Amtrak brought in a Genisis engine and 3 passenger cars for people to walk through. There was also a privately owned former Santa Fe passenger car that you could tour for a buck!
The City has done a beautiful job of restoring the station. I had the good fortune to have been able to see the inside of the station 3-4 years ago, and can attest to the amount of work that has taken place. Prior to this year, there was a museum located in an old wooden SF station (originally from Moody, TX). With the restoration of the Temple station, they have moved the museum into the second floor. The equipment that had been stored outside of the old museum has been moved to the new museum. The weekend of the event, the only thing that hadn't been moved was a Santa Fe 4-6-2, but they did have it up on blocks waiting for the moving company to take it to the station. Eventually the City plans to move the old Moody station over near the new museum also.
