1. The Resource Library: The National Smokers Alliance. A wealth of information on the issue of smoking and the fight against those who want to bring back Prohibition. The Resource Library consists of information dedicated to this issue.

2. Smokers Sue Against The Deal Of Shame: Forces. The disgusting settlement between the tobacco industry and the states, representative of the anti-tobacco cartel is going to be challenged by FORCES in court.

3. Medicaid Smokers Seek Share of States' Tobacco Settlement: By Stephen Labaton. None of the 46 states that were parties to the settlement, reached in 1998, plan payments to smokers. And many have begun using the money less for smoking-related programs like antitobacco education for youths than for initiatives like tax cuts and construction of roads and bridges.

4. WHO's Road To Hell: By Barun Mitra. The greatest achievement of the 20th Century has been the empowerment of the citizen: democracy. However, in parallel to this development there have been continuous attempts to restrict people's choice in the name of preserving public morality, health, economic well being, and now the environment. Clearly it has not been easy for the ruling establishments to recognise that if people have a legitimate say in choosing their representatives, then they have all the more right to decide on their personal preferences.

5. Those 400,000 Smoking "Victims" Live Longer Than The Rest Of Us! By Rosalind B. Marimont. THE SMOKING "VICTIMS" LIVED LONGER THAN THE REST OF US, BY ABOUT 2 YEARS - 71.9 vs. 70.
OVER 70,000, or about 17%, DIED "PREMATURELY" AT AGES GREATER THAN 85.
ONLY 1900, OR FEWER THAN O.5 % OF THE SMOKING "VICTIMS" DIED AT AGES LESS THAN 35, WHILE 143.000, OR 8% OF THE REST OF US DIED AT AGES LESS THAN 35.

6. Witless Wednesday: National Post. Clearly, Mr. Rock's anti-tobacco strategy is built less on science than puffery and is contradicted by people's own lives. Parliament should stub it out now.

7. Have Pipe, Will Travel: by Alan Schwartz. Choose your paraphernalia wisely, according to your needs, then travel well, secure that your favorite pipes and tobaccos will be in perfect shape for your happy landings.

8. We Are Everyday People:
*** SFD's Internet Smokers Network: User Communication Form. Thank You! Your comments may be posted to the Visitor's Page (but only if you leave your name and e-mail address.)

*** Clinton Favors Computer Snooping: by Declan McCullagh. WASHINGTON -- Visions of stealthy black helicopters landing on your lawn and disgorging Nomex-clad troops to steal your PGP keys aren't just for conspiracy theorists. The Clinton administration wants to be able to send federal agents armed with search warrants into homes to copy encryption keys and implant secret back doors onto computers. ……. "The basic principle is that people who are the subject of searches should have notice and the opportunity to challenge the search. This is particularly dangerous since it will be difficult to guarantee that evidence hasn't been tampered with," said Steinhardt. "What they are proposing to do is alter computer files. It's quite a chilling proposal."

*** Sex Drive Warning To Vegetarians And Elderly: BBC News. Researchers say people who do not eat enough protein are at risk of low testosterone levels which can cause a decline in sexual function as well as muscle loss, reduced red blood cells and damage to bones. People who do not eat meat are particularly at risk, because animal products are good sources of high biological value proteins.

*** The Workers Compensation Board (WCB) Of British Columbia Either Can't - Or won't - Answer: Hospitality Industry. They haven't received an answer. Perhaps our readers can help by asking the WCB as well. Make them accountable for the baseless, arbitrary 'law' they've imposed.

9. From the mailbag:

WASHINGTON (AP) _ As doctors struggle to understand why asthma is rising at an alarming rate, a report released Wednesday concludes microscopic dust mites that lurk in carpets and bedding can push children who are susceptible to asthma - but don't yet have it - to develop the disease.

We live to die, so that others can live. It is the law of nature for all species. Since we die, we die of cancer. Why do we die of cancer? Because we have extended life. But careful: we have only extended OLD AGE -- not childhood, youth and mature age. Most disease occurs to the old. And the most common disease of the old is cancer. That is why cancer has "grown". And it has nothing to do with smoking.

According to the California Smoke-free Bar Program, an offshoot of the ALA, 40% of California's stand alone bars are ignoring the smoking ban! Maybe they want to stay in business. With this announcement, the ALA is shooting more holes in Glantz's report on the thriving bar business in California even with a smoking ban in place. Do you suppose the ALA informed British Columbia of this information before they voted for a smoking ban?

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Benjamin Franklin 1759

To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions he disbelieves, is sinful and tyrannical.
Thomas Jefferson 1777

In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, brave hated and scorned.
When his cause succeeds however, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot."
Mark Twain.
