"Opinion is that exercise of the human will which helps us to make a decision without information."
John Erskine, American author and educator (1879-1951).

Backlash Against Smoking Law Huge:
A prison went on riot alert, a bar issued its employees gas masks, and now the layoffs have started. British Columbia is having a tough time facing up to new laws that make it illegal to smoke in public places, including bars and restaurants.

Jobs Up In Smoke:
According to Vance Campbell of the B.C. Coalition of Hospitality Organizations, "business is down in B.C. anywhere from 10% to 90%, depending on the type of the establishment and its location." The coalition estimates nearly 700 jobs have been lost. Even though air scrubbers can render indoor air cleaner than it is outside, the WCB haughtily dismissed the proposal, saying it didn't go far enough to ensure a safe and healthy environment (for unemployed workers, presumably).

Bars, Cafes File Suit In Smoking Fight :
Challenge Waterloo's right to issue ban. By Tony Reinhart. After weeks of threats, 100 bar and restaurant owners have filed a lawsuit against Waterloo Region over its tough anti-smoking bylaw. Dozens more are offering moral and financial support for the suit, which claims $106 million in damages and questions the region's constitutional authority to ban smoking.

Easing Of Smoke Ban Gets Mixed Reaction:
The Board of Health's surprise change of heart on restaurant smoking has gladdened some restaurant owners but left the board's chairwoman fuming about a triumph of politics over public health.

Irish Traditionalists Won't Butt Out :
As sure of it as anything in this world, Liam Craven crossed his arms, closed his eyes and announced, as if it was a solemn oath, ''It'll never happen in Ireland.''

The Center For Science In The Interest Of Publicity:
At CSIP, we've put hundreds, sometimes even dozens of hours into exhaustive research to prove that just about everything you like, or can like, is bad for you. And we aim to wipe out all these things in your lifetime, however truncated it might be due to the evil influences of science and technology and your unwitting participation.

In the West, Bad Smoke Signals:
What I fear, and you should fear even if you hate smoking, is that we have lost our spirit as a people. In the 1920s, our parents and grandparents gave the thumb-to-the-nose against Prohibition of liquor. If we bow to them now, these hookers and bribe takers, only Hitler wins.

Do Asset Forfeiture Laws Forfeit Our Rights? Louisiana state police stopped Cheryl Sanders for speeding. Claiming to believe that she was a drug dealer, officers hauled her off to jail and strip-searched her. No drugs were ever found, however, and Ms. Sanders had no prior arrest record. Nonetheless, the police seized her car "on suspicion." It took her seven months and thousands of dollars to get her car back.

SENIORS MUST LEARN TO SACRIFICE! All citizens of the USA should remember this!!!!!
I was embarrassed to read that President Clinton and his advisors have said, "The older generation must learn to sacrifice as other generations have done"
That's my generation. I knew eventually someone would ferret out the dirty secret: we've lived the "lifestyle of the rich and famous" all our lives. Now, I know I must bare the truth about my generation and let the country condemn us for our selfishness.
During the Depression we had a hilarious time dancing to the tune of "Brother Can You Spare A Dime?" We could choose to dine at any of the country's fabulous soup kitchens, often joined by our parents and siblings...those were the heady days of carefree self-indulgence.
Then, with World War II, the cup filled to overflowing. We had the chance to bask on the exotic beaches of Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and Okinawa; to see the capitols of Europe and travel to such scenic spots as Bastogne, Malmedy and Monte Cassino. Of course, one of the most exhilarating adventures was the stroll from Bataan to the local Japanese hotels, laughingly known as death camps.
But the good times really rolled for those lucky enough to be on the beaches of Normandy for the swimming and boating that pleasant June day in '44.
Unforgettable.
Even luckier were those that drew the prized holiday tickets for cruises on sleek, gray cruise ships to fun filled spots like Midway, The Solomons and Murmansk.
Instead of asking, "What can we do for our country," an indulgent government let us fritter away our youth wandering idly through the lush and lovely jungles of Burma and New Guinea.
Yes, it's all true: we were pampered; we were spoiled rotten; we never did realize what sacrifice meant. We envy you, Mr. Clinton, the harsh lessons you learned in London, Moscow and Little Rock.
My generation is old, Mr. President...and guilty; but we are repentant.
Punish us for our failings, sir, that we may learn the true meaning of Duty, Honor, and Country.
