1. The California Association of Retail Tobacconists, Inc. (C.A.R.T.) The California Association of Retail Tobacconists, Inc. have filed a Law Suit against prop 10 in the San Diego High Court. Instead of talking, we have taken the fight to the State of California and Rob Reiner, the beneficiary of the millions of tax dollars.

2. Chasing Our Customers Away: washingtonpost.com. Contrary to the blatherings of anti-smoking zealots such as Stanton Glantz, banning smoking in adult bars is not popular -- not with the employees, not with the customers (especially the tourists from other states) and most certainly not with the bar owners.

3. Rio State Government Sues U.S. Tobacco Companies: HealthCentral. RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP)--Rio state government has begun a lawsuit against U.S. tobacco firms in a bid to recover the public health care costs of treating sick smokers.

4. Tussling Over Tobacco Money, Forgetting the Victims: By Judy Jarvis. The money was supposed to pay the states back for all the cash they've spent over the years treating sick smokers. But state and Federal taxes on tobacco, already in place, have provided more than enough money to cover these costs all along. Was it the tobacco companies' fault that politicians chose to spend this money on roads and bridges?

5. Tobacco Verdict May Lead To Copy-Cat Cases: By Gregg Fields. While I'm always happy when the underdog wins, with last week's tobacco verdict I nonetheless fear we have stepped upon a slippery legal slope. "Jury will set damages at a later date. In interim, jury has agreed to set bond at $10 zillion, or property bond in the form of Australia. Whichever is greater."

6. Are Cigars Getting Safer? By Jacob Sullum. No, but reporters may be getting smarter.

7. Ban on Bread Ingredient Called For: Infobeat. Consumer advocates petitioned the government Monday to ban a chemical used in certain breads and other bakery items because it can cause cancer in laboratory animals. (Issue #12 ran a comedy page: Smell Of Baked Bread May Be Health Hazard. Internet/comedy/art imitates life?)

8. We Are Everyday People:
*** When Smoking Cigarettes & Tobacco, Liberty Helps: The Libertarian Party. Just because you like to smoke cigarettes or use other tobacco products, They think they have the right to force you not to smoke (through taxation or direct prohibition).
*** Underground Political Art: Rockaway Park Philosophical Society. We live in the words of the US papers in a wonderful world with all-wise, beknighted, courageous US leaders who are so smart that I question how the world got along without them.
*** Genetic Basis For Alcohol, Nicotine Addiction: Reuters Health. A dependency on both alcohol and nicotine - two vices that often go hand-in-hand - may be due to a common genetic factor, results of a study suggest.
*** Cockroaches Linked To Wheezing In Infants: intelihealth. The presence of cockroach allergen -- proteins shed by the insects -- in a child's home during the first 3 months of life increased the risk of two or more wheezing episodes by more than 60%, according to a report in the July issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

"What happened to the dreams of the United Nation's founders? What has happened to the spirit which created the United Nations? The answer is clear: governments got in the way of the dreams of the people."
Ronald Reagan, 1983
Web-Star's Power Quote of the Day

Nick Greiner, Chairman WD&HO Wills (Australia) did not send email to Forces or anyone else. Some Anti-Smoker is impersonating him. ( This is just dirty tactics from a coward with no imagination.)
