I cannot guarantee 100% accuracy with respect to the contents of this site.  There are inherent inaccuracies in any genealogical research due to the fact that humans are prone to lying.  Many lied about their age to get married.  Many lied about their age to join the military.  I have seen different dates of birth and different locations of birth for individuals in different records, both public and private.  I have found that it is not unusual for people to lie to representatives of government, either because they do not trust government's motives for seeking information or because they believe that it is not government's right to know all.   Most early census records were prepared by people who had limited education and limited knowledge of languages other than English.  They frequently were among the few persons in a community who had any reading and writing ability so that they became not only the logical choices to conduct a census, but the only choices to conduct censuses in most areas of the nation.  Since census takers frequently were recording information received orally from illiterate persons, they spelled names the way the name sounded to them and since Americans have always been highly mobile, subsequent censuses were conducted by people who had different life and language experiences than those who preceded them.   This resulted in many different spellings of the same names in different records over the course of time.  Many families adopted the spellings of their names from the federal census, having never known the spelling of their ancestral names.  Some of the records are based on the memories of friends and family.  Most people's memories of the past are colored by their prejudices so that what they remember is frequently no more than what they want to remember.  It is essential, therefore, to cross reference any genealogical record against all other available records for a specific individual to ascertain the degree of accuracy of the record.

Notes for Henry Shields:
According to a 1880 census information supplied by G.W. Shields, Henry was born in Tennessee. He migrated here from Tennessee in early 1850's because his son, G.W. was born in Texas in 1853. The 1880 census records a W.H. Shields living in McKinney area of Collin County.
According to the 1900 census Henry and Lucinda married in 1875. Texas death records indicate that Henry died on Jan 6 1904. His obituary was recorded in two McKinney newspapers: The Collin County Courier and the McKinney Democrat. The Courier ran the Obit on Jan 7 1904 (page 1) and the Democrat, on Jan 14 1904 (page 2).
Henry Shields' Obituary reads as follows:
Death of Henry Shields - Pioneer Citizen of White's Grove Passes Away. Sixty-eight years old -- resided in Collin county for more than half a century. Seven children. Henry Shields, aged sixty-eight years, died yesterday at his home near White's Grove. He was one of the early settlers of Collin County, moving here long before the war, some fifty-three years ago and no man was better known and more highly esteemed than "Uncle Henry" as he was familiarly known.
He has been twice married, the first union (Cassandra Phillips) being blessed with four children, all living, as follows: George Shields who resides a few miles south of McKinney, Jim and Tom of near Weston, and Willie of Farmersville.
After his marriage to the wife (Lucinda Pell) who survives him, three children were born, namely: Eliza - Mrs. T.R. Foreman - of this city (McKinney), Lee, who recently married, and Lillie, a young lady at home. He has a sister living at Bonham.
Mr. Shields was a life-long member of the Baptist church. Holding his membership at Mt. Olive at the time of his death. He was a good man in every sense of the word.
The funeral took place this afternoon at 2 o'clock, the services were conducted by Dr. E..E.. King of this city. The interment was made in Mt. Olive Cemetery (Williams Cemetery).
More About Henry Shields:
Burial: January 08, 1904, Williams Cemetry, Collin Co, TX
Census: 1850, Greene County, Tennessee

Notes for Casandra Phillips:
It is believed that Casandra (Phillips) Shields is buried in the Williams Cemetery just east of McKinney. There is no headstone of any sort to mark her grave. Both her father, Rev. Johnethan and mother, Rebecky are buried in the old section of the cemetery with several open grave spaces to the north of their head stones. Casandra' s brother is also buried next to his father.
Marriage Notes for Henry Shields and Casandra Phillips:
Henry and Cassandra were married by her father, Johnethan Philips.

Notes for Hugh Cox:
*from the flyleaf of the Shields Family Bible - copy provided by Rhonda Merriman of Jackson, Mississippi.

Notes for Brookson Campbell Shields:
Brookson Shields is not recorded in any other censuses in Tennessee or Texas. It is supposed that Mary Polly Matthews Shields died of complications from childbirth and the child, Brookson, died also. It is note worthy that Henry Shields (son of William and Mary Polly) named one of his children after this deceased child.

Note:  (This starts getting complicated because Jacob Swafford and Sarah Larkin's grandson John L. Swafford by their son Alfred Annison Swafford married their granddaughter Sarah K. Swafford by their son Richard Swafford which made John L. and Sarah K. more than kissing cousins. More than that, Jacob Swafford's brother Thomas Younger Swafford's daughter Malinda C. Swafford married her cousin Richard, son of Jacob.   Richard was the father of Sarah K. so that John L.'s paternal grandfather Jacob is brother to his cousin/wife's paternal grandfather Thomas Younger Swafford.   John L. was born 1844 in Tennessee.  His father was born 1814 in Tennessee.   His uncle/father-in-law was born 1808 in South Carolina.  His grandfather Jacob who is also the grandfather of his wife was born 1762 in South Carolina.  His great-grandfather Peter James Swafford was born in 1725 in Belfast, Ireland.  Peter's wife Rennie Howard was born in Belfast.  Peter's son Thomas was born 1783 in South Carolina and  married a Matilda Howard.  It took approximately 100 years between Ireland and Tennessee through South Carolina for the Swafford clan to get it out of the family.  The exception was Alfred Annison Swafford who had two wives, Nancy Ahl and Elizabeth Dixon, and neither was related to him by blood.  Consanguinity (common ancestors) was, unfortunately, rather common among early immigrants, who took the Bible out of context by taking "marry into your own tribe" too literally.  As a former biblical studies major in a conservative fundamentalist church-sponsored college I have read that passage and found that it has nothing to do with racial purity but everything to do with Jewish real-estate inheritance rights under Hebrew Mosaic Law since title to the real property of an unmarried Jewish woman inherited from her father was transferred to her husband when she married.  Think of it this way. Under Hebrew law, if a man being a resident of Tennessee dies without a son, his daughter obtains his land by inheritance.  If she marries a man who is a resident of Georgia, her inherited property becomes part of the state of Georgia as property of her husband.  That is what Moses was dealing with in Numbers chapter 36; property inheritance, not racial purity.  Moses himself had been criticized by his siblings for marrying the Ethiopian woman in Numbers chapter 12 and was vindicated by God.  The Native American ancestors practiced inter-tribal marriage as a means of preventing or reducing the probability of inherited diseases and emotional disorders.  By tribal law, a person could not marry a member of the clan of either of their parents or any of their grandparents.)

Cherokee Beliefs and Practices of the Ancients---Out of the Flame  by James Adair,
Edited by Willena H. Robinson
pub. 1998 by Cherokee Language and Culture 4158 East 48th Place, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74135-4739
Note:  Adair's Twenty-three arguments in favor of the Southern Tribes being descendants of ancient Hebrews originally published 1775 London as part of a larger work entitled History of the American Indians
Hawk comments:  One man's observations of Chickasaw, Creek, Choctaw and Cherokee cultures of the American South during the middle of the 16th Century.   Contains random comparisons of local words with Hebrew words in Hebrew text with some transliteration and translation.  Adair's observations on Southeastern Tribes culture, language and religion is remarkably subjective yet laced with his ethnocentric views of European superiority.  The exception is his vitriolic hatred of French, Spanish and Italian Roman Catholics, especially in argument twenty-three.  He lambastes the "Romanists and Papists" ferociously, citing early Spanish writings as examples of ethnocentric excess and exaggeration.  One commentator stated that it is questionable as to where Adair got his information on Spanish texts considering that he never learned the Spanish language.

Native American History   by Judith Nies
pub.1996 by Ballantine Books
Note:  Parallel American-World History from 28,000B.C. to 20th Century.
Hawk comments:  Excellent example of historical-archaeological information in chronological format.  Author stated that this work was not her original intent; that she had intended to focus on contemporary strip-mining of Hopi and Navajo lands in the 20th Century that resulted in the largest removal of American Natives since the 1800s.   We can only be thankful that she yielded to the guidance of whatever muse was pushing her.

History, Myths, and Sacred Formulas of the Cherokees   by James Mooney
pub. 1992 by Bright Mountain Books 138 Springside Rd. Asheville, North Carolina 28803
Note:  Complete text of two separate books republished as one volume.  Mooney was an Irish immigrant employed by the American Bureau of Ethnology and lived among the Cherokee and Kiowa long enough to learn their languages and document their culture during the latter part of the 19th Century.
Hawk comments:  While Mooney lived among the tribes long enough to achieve a measure of empathy for them, he never assimilated to the point that some Europeans did as depicted in the popular movie Dances With Wolves. Although Mooney never stopped being an employee of the U.S. government while living among the tribes, he did not always act in accordance with government objectives.  Most notable is his role in incorporating the Native American Church in Oklahoma, an action that led the Bureau of Indian Affairs to ban him from setting foot on any reservation in the country for the remainder of his life since he was perceived as being too sympathetic to Native causes.
