What comes to one’s mind when you’re watching Mohabbatein is: Is this the same Director who made the film that grossed the second highest collection figures at the box office ever? Dilwale Dulhanya Le Jayenge was Adita Chopra’s maiden project that he made in 1995. If he tried to recreate the same kind of magical mush once again in the form of Mohabbatein then it is definitely a disappointment to say the least.

One must wonder: was DDLJ’S success a result of papa Yash cause as one can see from Mohabbatein, for a maker of DDLJ, the new venture lacks a solid script, lacks directorial credibility and is devoid of an impressive treatment. Adi’s 3 hours 40 minutes mega dream is a lesson for every film maker in the Bollywood industry.

Yes. He has to be given credit to bring together a legend ( Amitabh Bachchan) and a reigning superstar (Shah Rukh) together for the first time. Maybe that was the only high point of the film if one looks for any. But probably that was all it was supposed to be. But maybe Chopra forgot one thing: its not superstars and Legends that make a film..but a good script and a good director do!

The story goes something like this: Once upon a time there was this college/university (not too sure what it was..where it was? ) called Gurukul whose principal Narayan Shankar ( Amitabh Bachchan) ruled the place with an iron hand. No pyar, no feelings, no holi.. diwali and the works allowed in the premises. Only Puja, sanskriti and scriptures and feeding the birds was allowed. For romancing with his daughter ( Ash), the boy is kicked out of the school and he never got admission again anywhere.

So when the three new students ( Uday Chopra, Jugal Hansraj and Jimmy Shergill) enter Gurukul whats the first thing they do..: Fall in love with the three girls( Kim Sharma, Shamit Shetty and Preeti Jhangiani). And in comes Music teacher Raj Aryan ( Shah Rukh Khan), to help them fight for their cause and to put to rest the sadness of his dead lover ( Aishwarya Rai).

So basically the film is about Narayan’s Darr and Raj Aryan’s Mohabbat where naturally love triumphs in the end!.

Must be mentioned is that fact that in this big school/college no other teacher exists other than the Principal and the music teacher. Interesting!!

What really went wrong with Aditya Chopra’s Mohabbatein is a difficult question. Probably lots of things everywhere.

Raj Aryan's monologue towards the end in which he tells Narayan Shanker why he has lost also packs a powerful punch, and Shah Rukh performs brilliantly in that scene. Amitabh Bachchan, though dressed in absurd black garb, simply towers above the rest. Without so much a twitching a muscle, with just the right look in his eyes, he walks off with the film

Can’t say if it is Amitabh’s cardboard rendition of the hyper-strict Narayan Shankar? Or the fact that the film looks like another sad attempt on Shahrukh to consolidate his box office status. Reducing Ash to a ghost in the film did not seem to be such a good idea and where the three couples were concerned…lets not even go there. Don’t think they were screen tested very well.

If this is supposed to be Bollywood’s biggest savior of the year than God save Indian cinema!
