Our Lady Of Czestochowa

The Black Madonna

Our Lady Of Czestochowa

Patroness of the Order of St. Thomas

HISTORY OF THE IMAGE

The origin of this miraculous image in Czestochowa, Poland is unknown for absolute certainty, but according to tradition the painting was a portrait of Our Lady done by St, John sometime after the Crucifixion of Our Lord and remained in the Holy Land until discovered by St. Helena of the Cross in the fourth century. The painting was taken to Constaninople, where St. Helena's son, the Emperor Constantine, erected a church for its enthronement. This image was revered by the people of the city.

During  the siege by the Saracens, the invaders became frightened when the people carried the picture in a procession around the city; as a result, the enemy fled. Later, the image was  threatened with burning by an evil emperor, who had a wife, Irene, who saved it and hid it from harm. The image was in that city for 500 years, until it became part of some dowries, eventually being taken to Russia to a region that later became Poland.

After the portrait became the possession of the Polish prince, St. Ladislaus in the 15th century, it was installed in his castle. Tartar invaders besieged the castle and an enemy arrow pierced Our Lady's image, inflicting a scar. Interestingly, repeated attempts to fix the image, artistically have all failed.

Tradition says that St. Ladislaus determined to save the image from repeated invasions, so he went to his birthplace, Opala, stopping for rest in Czestochowa; the image was brought nearby to Jasna Gora ["bright hill"] and placed in a small wooden church named for the Assumption. The following morning, after the picture was carefully placed in the wagon, the horses refused to move. St. Ladislaus understood this to be a sign from Heaven that the image should stay in Czestochowa; thus he replaced the painting in the Church of the Assumption, August 26, 1382, a day still observed as the Feast Day of the painting. The Saint wished to have the holiest of men guard the painting, so he assigned the church and the monastery to the Pauline Fathers, who have devoutly protected the image for the last six hundred years.

The two slashes on the cheek of the Blessed Virgin, together with the one on the throat, not readily visible in our copy, have always reappeared after artistic attempts to fix them.

The portrait again faced danger in 1655 by a Swedish horde of 12,000, which confronted the 300 men guarding the image. The band of 300 routed the 12,000 and the following year, the Holy Virgin was acclaimed Queen of Poland.

In September 14, 1920, when the Russian army assembled at the River Vistula, in preparation for invading Warsaw, the Polish people prayed to Our Lady. the next day was the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The Russians quickly withdrew after the image appeared in the clouds over Warsaw. In Polish history, this is known as the Miracle of Vistula.

During the Nazi occupation of Poland in World War II, Hitler order all religious pilgrimages stopped. In a demonstration of love for Our Lady and their confidence in her protection, a half million Poles went to the sanctuary in defiance of Hitler's orders. Following the liberation of Poland in 1945, a million and a half people expressed their gratitude to the Madonna by praying before this miraculous image.

Twenty-eight years after the Russian's first attempt at capturing the city, they successfully took control of Warsaw and the entire nation in 1948. That year more than 800,000 brave Poles made a pilgrimage to the sanctuary at Czestochowa on the Feast of the Assumption, one of the three Feast days of the image; the pilgrims had to pass by the Communist soldiers who patrolled the streets.

Today, the Polish people continue to honor their beloved portrait of the Madonna and Child, especially on August 26, the day reserved by St. Ladislaus. Because of the dark pigment on Our Lady's face and hands, the image is affectionately called the "Black Madonna," most beautifully prefigured in the Bible, in the Canticle of Canticles, "I am black but beautiful." The pigmentation is ascribed primarily to age and the need to keep it hidden for long periods of time in places where the only light was from candles, which colored the painting with smoke.

The miracles attributed to Our Lady of Czestochowa are many and most spectacular. The original accounts of them,  some of them cures, are archived by the Pauline Fathers at Jasna Gora

The Primary Rosary devotions used by OST

The first is the Rosa Mystica rosary or Chaplet of tears.

It is red and white. This rosary is 7 decades with 7 beads in each decade.

The Rosa Mystica Rosary allows us to complete our daily prayers for the Living and the dead, to praise Christ and honor the Mother and the day with simplicity and a sense of deep mystical devotion, and still get to work on time.

The second is primarily used by our Friars and is called the Franciscan Crown or 7 Ray Rosary. Our Friars hold dear a private mission to teach the more mystical aspects of the Catholic Mass and Altar to anyone interested.

The Ray Rosary is the tool of devotion and healing Friars use to Practice and study our Mystical union with Christ.

Our Lady’s Rosary of the Seven Rays:

(You may begin with the violet decade and end in red).

Start by making the sign of the Cross:  + In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Holding the cross in your right hand, drape the centerpiece across your left palm “Mary side” up, and recite the Act of Faith:

We believe that God is Love, and Power, and Truth, and Light; that perfect justice rules the world; that all His children shall one day reach His feet, however far they stray. We hold the Fatherhood of God, the Brotherhood of man; we know that we do serve Him best when best we serve our brother man. So shall His blessing rest on us + and peace for evermore. Amen.

Then say 1 Our Father on the bead nearest the cross:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine + is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.  Amen.

Then 3 Hail Marys on the next 3 beads (for the virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity):

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray to the Light for us thy children, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Then 1 Glory Be on the chain:  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

On the bead near the centerpiece:

The Joy of the 1st Ray is the Annunciation:

Luke 1: 26-38.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.” And Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, since I have no husband?” And the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Amen.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray to the Light for us thy children, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.  (10 X)

O God, grant that we, like the Holy Lady Mary, may have the Strength and bravery to say, when You have called us to Your work, “Let it be to me according to Your word.” Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

On the chain: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Joy of the 2nd Ray is the Visitation:

Luke 1: 39-45.

In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and she entered the house of Zechari’ah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

Amen.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray to the Light for us thy children, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.  (10 X)

O God, grant that we, like Elizabeth, may be filled with Your Holy Spirit and Love, who through Wisdom perceived that Mary was blessed among women, and that the fruit of her womb was blessed.  Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

On the chain:  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Joy of the 3rd Ray is the Nativity:

Luke 2: 1-7.

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirin’i-us was governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Amen.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray to the Light for us thy children, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.  (10 X)

O God, who had such tact as to meet men on their own ground through the incarnation of the Christ, grant that we may achieve such Adaptability to Your will in the circumstances of our lives that the Christ may be born in us for the betterment of all those we encounter.  Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

On the chain:  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Joy of the 4th Ray is the Epiphany:

Matthew 2: 1-12

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.’” Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

Amen.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray to the Light for us thy children, now and at the hour of  our death. Amen.  (10 X)

O God, grant that we, like the astrologers who knew that the star of Beauty above found its true counterpart in the manger below, may know that in the Harmony of existence there is no bar or wall in our souls whereby Your Light ceases and we begin.  Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

On the chain:  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Joy of the 5th Ray is the Finding in the Temple:

Luke 2: 41-51.

Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom; and when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the company they went a day’s journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances; and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him.  After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions; and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.” And he said to them, “How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart.

Amen.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray to the Light for us thy children, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.  (10 X)

O God, grant that we may achieve such Knowledge and accuracy in our work that we may be like the boy Jesus, who astonished the teachers in the temple.  Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

On the chain:  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Joy of the 6th Ray is the Resurrection:

Matthew 28: 1-8.

Now after the sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Mag’dalene and the other Mary went to see the sepulchre. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. His appearance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. Lo, I have told you.” So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

Amen.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray to the Light for us thy children, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.  (10 X)

O God, grant that we may recognize that our resurrection in Christ is an ongoing process whereby all that is good finally triumphs over all that is destructive in life, and may our Devotion so increase in power and scope that we may say with Him, “If I am lifted up, I will draw all men to myself.” Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

On the chain:  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Joy of the 7th Ray is the Assumption and Coronation:

Revelation 12: 1; Psalm 45: 13-14; Ecclesiasticus 24: 2-6; Psalm 16: 9-11; Proverbs 8: 32-35.

And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

The princess is decked in her chamber with gold-woven robes; in many-colored robes she is led to the king, with her virgin companions, her escort, in her train.

In the assembly of the Most High she will open her mouth, and in the presence of his host she will glory: “I came forth from the mouth of the Most High, and covered the earth like a mist. I dwelt in high places, and my throne was in a pillar of cloud. Alone I have made the circuit of the vault of heaven and have walked in the depths of the abyss. In the waves of the sea, in the whole earth, and in every people and nation I have gotten a possession.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also dwells secure. For You do not give me up to the place of the dead, or let your holy one see corruption. You show me the path of life; in Your presence there is fulness of joy, in Your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

And now, my sons, listen to me: happy are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it. Happy is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. For he who finds me finds life and obtains favor from the LORD.

Amen.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray to the Light for us thy children, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.  (10 X)

O God, who after her assumption crowned the Holy Lady Mary as the Queen of Angels and Men, grant that we may live our lives in Ordered Service after the example of Your Holy Angels, realizing our place in the spiritual hierarchy among the community of saints.  Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

On the chain:  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Holding the cross in your right hand, drape the centerpiece across your left palm, “Jesus side” up (revealing the truth that Mary shows us the way to Christ) and recite:

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Love!  Our life, our sweetness, our Holy Lady Mary!  To thee do we sing, to thee do we lift up our hearts.  Turn then, most gracious Mother, thine eyes of compassion toward us, and lead us unto the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.  Amen.

[Hail, full of grace! Mother of all, yet Virgin Immaculate! Blessed Lady Mary, Star of the Sea and Queen of Angels, you are high among the offspring of this our evolutionary cycle. Because of the noble work which you have done, because of the wonderful purity, great wisdom, and devotion which you have shown, because of the splendid patience and courage with which you bore the terrible sufferings that came unto you when you saw your Son misunderstood and murdered, you have made great advancement on the Path, and become, indeed, an Adept. World Mother, you are pure of intention, thought, feeling and action. We set our affection on you as a model and pattern of humanity. Grant unto us that we may be one-pointed and pure in our devotion to the Christ. Grant unto us compassion and patience. Pour through us the strength which you are spreading abroad upon the world. Make us channels for your power and your grace, your wisdom and your love. Amen.]

[O God, whose only begotten {alone-born} Son, by His eternal life, death, and resurrection has shown the gnosis of the mystical life, grant we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these Mysteries of Our Lady’s Rosary of the Seven Rays, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise:  through the same Christ our Lord.  Amen.]
