This was the second classical music tape I bought when I began to get interested in classical music. I wore the tape out and had to buy a CD. It has a selection of all types of classical music. It is a good CD for a beginner in classical music. The Astronuts listened to this tape during the Leonid shower this November. Although his Zurich orchestra plays modern instruments, the interpretive style of these performances owes a debt to the "historically informed" approach of conductor/scholars like John Eliot Gardiner and Roger Norrington. Zinman adheres closely to Beethoven's controversially fast metronome markings. He can drive the music hard, with exciting results, but he is flexible enough to allow the lyrical melodies to breathe and sing. In the great Adagio of the Ninth Symphony, for instance, the tempo flows rather briskly, but the phrases are gracefully shaped to avoid any sense of rushing -- a problem that seriously afflicts Norrington's reading. I really enjoy this CD. This was the first Beethoven tape I ever had. I found myself listening to it everyday. Beethoven has become one of my favorite composers. Do they ever complement a starry night!! A nocturne deals with evening or night and is a dreamy pensive composition for the piano. If you like piano at all, you must have this CD. Chopin's Nocturnes are music for the night and lovers of the night. Night is the time for romance, mystery, and desire, so no wonder Frédéric Chopin's Nocturnes are the quintessence of 19th-century piano music. If you shut your eyes, any of these perfumed fantasies would make the perfect sound track to your own romantic movie -- filmed in black and white, of course -- complete with moonlit assignations and curtains blowing through the french doors of deserted palace ballrooms. Each nocturne has its own distinct character, and it's a tribute to Chopin's genius that he created so many diverse visions of the night. Arthur Rubinstein was closely associated with Chopin's music throughout his life. Audio CD Number of Discs: 1 MOZART: VIOLIN CONCERTOS 1 Mela Tenenbaum 17.98 Format: CD Release Date: Jun 15 1999 Label: ESSAY Here's good, old-fashioned music making, full of warmth and character. Mela Tenenbaum, a Russian-born violinist, doesn't pussyfoot around in this delightful trio of masterpieces by the young Mozart. She may not have Itzhak Perlman's smooth, sweet sound or Arthur Grumiaux's effortless elegance, but her daredevil spirit is something special. She's not afraid to dig into phrases, or to vigorously toss off a virtuoso passage. Her singing tone makes the most of the aria-like slow movements, but it's the zest of her interpretations that makes this disc worthwhile. The Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra plays with verve under American conductor Richard Kapp, and the closely miked recording only enhances the invigorating spirit of these joyous performances. And if there are any lingering doubts that he remains The Great American Pianist, they will be totally allayed by RCA's nine-CD tribute, THE WILLIAM KAPELL EDITION. The playing here ranges from the merely extraordinary to the frankly unbelievable, whether in the new-mown freshness of the Bach D Major Partita, the rugged power of the Copland Sonata (not surprisingly, the composer's favorite recording), or the surging romance and crackling energy of Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata (with Edmund Kurtz), Second Piano Concerto, and "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" -- the last-named in that unsurpassable collaboration with Fritz Reiner, who inspired the Robin Hood Dell Orchestra to play as if possessed.
