FACES OF PAPUA

Vol. 9, # 1    w MISSION NEWS FROM STEPHEN AND CAROLYN CROCKETT     w      March 2002

WHY      LORD     ? ? ?

During these beginning days of working among the Moi people, we often find ourselves shaking our heads and asking “Why?”  There are so many unknowns for us – why they do the things they do.

Why do they break the legs or wings of an animal before they cook and eat it?

Why don’t the ladies admit they are pregnant even when they are obviously nine months along?

Why does the Moi word for rainbow – mbaadamo – literally mean “spirit’s walking stick”?

Why did Daiipupu (above) bite off a piece of Maseaaba bark, chew it up, and spit it all over Stephen’s arms, chest, neck, and face?

Why do they slash themselves all over their bodies when they are bitten by a centipede?

Why did the people in the hamlet across the valley from us response to a young boy’s centipede bite by cutting him repeatedly until he bled to death?

And the BIGGEST “why” of all!!!

Why did that young boy die without having a chance to hear the gospel in his own language?

Family Corner

Ashley (8) and Mariah (6) along with their cousin Brandt are the first students in the Mooi elementary school.

The girls have enjoyed our family “adventure” here in the Mooi.  Always something new to explore  and discover.  Always something new and crawly to bring home to Mom.

Praise the Lord for:

Continued progress in the study and analysis of the Mooi* language.

Our first six months in the Mooi drawing to a close with good adjustment and the feeling of being settled as a family – Home Sweet Home!

Please pray for:

Our partners, Tim and Kathy Whatley, as they head home on furlough, and Anderson and Lieke Panambunan as they return from furlough.

The ongoing work on the airstrip.  (Right now an ATV with wings would be the only thing that might be able to land on it).
