Unfortunately, the spaceframe was not initially designed (as the TRAFALGAR-class spaceframe was) with the structural stresses caused by the pulsed-beam technology as a factor. As a result, the "blaster cannon" can only be fired a limited number of times - about twenty-five to thirty at full power - before the ship must go into drydock and have several of its fittings, housings, and support struts and beams replaced. Because of this design problem, the project was cancelled after only a handful were built. The revolutionary pulsed beam phaser cannon (rated on the same scale with its first cousin, the pulse phaser cannon) gives it firepower unmatched in any other frigate, but keeping the size, speed, and maneuverability of the INTREPID-class spaceframe. The pulsed beam phaser cannon's effect is similar to that of the so-called "blaster cannon" once proposed as an addition to the GALAXY-class design, though much less powerful (the proposed GALAXY version of the "blaster cannon" would be rated a Type VII) and with a slightly shorter range, due to the smaller diameter of the mount (necessary for it to fit within the INTREPID-class spaceframe). Like the original INTREPID-class, this class is capable of planetfall. All McPHERSON-class starships are to be named for historians and authors, and will be given registry numbers in the 91860 series.
