Its unmatched maneuverability at impulse speeds is equivalent to that of a shuttlecraft at half its speed. The long, knifelike design - inspiration for the class name - allows it to exploit the new warp field geometry also used in the ORCA class and its variants. However, it causes problems, as the ship has trouble focusing its firepower dead ahead. The external appearance of the KATANA class spaceframe looks much like a streamlined, flattened version of the INTREPID class design, with fixed warp nacelles. Like most StarFleet frigates, the ship is configured for planetary landings. Unusually for a StarFleet ship, it is also configured for underwater operations, as well as operations in extremely dense atmospheres such as those of gas-giant type planets. In a break from modern StarFleet tradition, the KATANA class does not include a detachable 'Captain's Yacht' on the underside of the ship. Technical Data on the RIMS Field: Reduced Inertial Mass Subspace Field: A subspace bubble around the ship, active except during docking maneuvers and FTL travel, reduces the inertial mass of the vessel at sublight velocities by a factor of twenty. This allows the ship to achieve relativistic velocities, even with its seriously underpowered impulse drive, and also allows extreme maneuverability for a ship its size. In fact, it has a turning radius as small as that of a shuttlecraft at half its speed.
