With the Interchangeable Equipment System modules, a LOS ANGELES-class starship may be optimized to nearly any possible mission. The LOS ANGELES-class' main departures from the NEBULA-class design are the twin pulse phaser turrets, located on the starboard and port edges of the primary hull, as well as a third on the aft tip of the secondary hull, and the substitution of quantum torpedo launchers for the lower yield photon torpedo system used in smaller vessels. The LOS ANGELES-class design was completed in July 2395, and one prototype went under construction. The USS LOS ANGELES was launched on SD 980120. After a short test flight, many more LOS ANGELES-class ships went under construction, to be launched beginning in May 2398. The LOS ANGELES was used as a training craft at StarFleet Academy until SD 000215, when it was reassigned to Operations Command. Unlike the NEBULA-class it was designed after, the LOS ANGELES-class is not capable of saucer separation. All LOS ANGELES-class starships are to be named for Earth cities, and will be given registry numbers in the 90000 series.
