The vaguely sharklike design was the inspiration for its name (they were originally to be called the QUASAR-class), and its curvature takes advantage of the curves of a warp field, allowing it to establish a smaller, tighter field, thus getting more speed with less power expenditures. Capable of planetfall, and newer than the INTREPID-class spaceframe, the ORCA-class spaceframe is expected to join it as the backbone of StarFleet's frigate forces. The SWORDSMAN class modification carries over a larger, more powerful warp drive from the previous GAZELLE class modification, giving it increased speed, acceleration, and maneuverability, at warp speeds, with sensors and deflectors enhanced to match. However, the overpowered impulse drive has been replaced by a subspace bubble around the ship that reduces inertial mass at impulse velocities (thus producing the same effect as overpowered engines: speed, maneuverability, and acceleration), the RIMS field. This class's speed and maneuverability is seen as the epitome of the modern fast frigate, and is one of the fastest ships ever built by StarFleet. The SWORDSMAN class modification also employs a revolutionary new computer system, replacing the traditional mammoth FTL supercomputers, the DRIPS Network. Technical data on the DRIPS Network Computer System: Decentralized Redundant Isolinear Processor System (DRIPS): a controversial design for a starship's main computer system, this system did away with the mammoth supercomputer cores, used on most Federation ships both before and since. Instead operating within permanent FTL fields, backed up by hundreds of redundant micro-coprocessors, the DRIPS Network does the same job with a network of dozens of smaller units throughout the ship which do not require FTL fields. This decentralized design has the benefits of multiple redundancy and resiliency, as well as lower power consumption, as well as greater computational speed on less demanding functions, but with these come with the cost of computational speed on more demanding functions; the balance comes at use of about sixteen percent of the total system. Its constant problems with high-demand computational functions drove StarFleet to revoke the program and return to the traditional FTL supercomputer cores in later ships. Technical Data on the RIMS Field: Reduced Inertial Mass Subspace Field: A subspace bubble around the ship, active except during docking maneuvers and FTL travel, reduces the inertial mass of the vessel at sublight velocities by a factor of twenty. This allows the ship to achieve relativistic velocities, even with its seriously underpowered impulse drive, and also allows extreme maneuverability for a ship its size. In fact, it has a turning radius almost as small as that of the newer ENDEAVOUR class transport, which is small enough to fit in the SWORDSMAN's shuttlebay. The SWORDSMAN-class starships are to be named for types of warriors, and will be given registry numbers in the 95100 series.
