These fighters are designed primarily for battles against enemies with large quantities of small vessels such as the Maquis. It carries two rear-mounted nacelles, in a pattern similar to the older SOVERIGN, GALAXY, AMBASSADOR, or EXCELSIOR classes, and has a pelican-like look to its saucer, meant to accomodate its six massive flight bays, which open to the forward of the ship, a departure from previous StarFleet design. Equipped with the most powerful shields, deflectors, and sensors StarFleet has ever mounted upon a starship, and in fact superior to those of some older starbases, the STENNIS class is a formidable opponent for any force short of a Borg cube or equivalent, not because of its own weaponry but because of its resilience and its runabouts' weaponry. The STENNIS-class design was completed in January 2393, and several prototypes went under construction. The USS JOHN C STENNIS was launched on SD 980131. More STENNIS-class ships will be launched beginning in May 2398. The STENNIS-class is not capable of saucer separation. The STENNIS-class has an additional senior officer, known as the CWC, or Combat Wing Commander. This should be filled by a helm officer of distinguished service, or by an experienced combat pilot. All STENNIS-class starships are to be named for great military or political leaders and will be given registry numbers in the 91000 series.
