This class was designed with heavy combat in mind. While it maintains much of the external appearances of a GALAXY-class variant, it is much larger and incorporates two new design features originally suggested as possible upgrades to the basic GALAXY-class design. With its third nacelle, mounted above and between the familiar two nacelles of the GALAXY configuration, it is capable of warp operations even when seriously damaged. Its other innovation, the revolutionary pulsed beam phaser cannon (rated on the same scale with its first cousin, the pulse phaser cannon) gives it firepower unmatched in any other battlecruiser, but keeping the size, speed, and maneuverability of a spaceframe somewhat smaller than that of a battleship. The pulsed beam phaser cannon's effect is similar to that of the so-called "blaster cannon" once proposed as an addition to the GALAXY-class design. The success in testing of the "blaster cannon" led to its integration on the slightly newer McPHERSON-class frigates, but there it did not perform as well (because the INTREPID-class spaceframe was not designed to handle the structural stresses caused by the pulsed beam technology). The 'Captain's Yacht' detachable vessel, normally located on the underside of the saucer, has been relocated to a small docking bay at the base of the center nacelle pylon. The TRAFALGAR-class is not capable of saucer separation, as the Pulsed Beam Phaser Cannon's mount is connected to both the saucer and drive section; also, as a space saving measure, the necessary redundant bulkheads and docking clamps were not included in the design. All TRAFALGAR-class starships are to be named for famous battles, and will be given registry numbers in the 91400 series.
