Artist Statement

taken from "The Three Mum's" Catalogue;
My own mother, Elva Landt, who was very good with pencil and brush and who always claimed to be the basis of any artistic talent I have.  My father was also a good drafts man.  Mum encouraged me greatly from 1958 when she thought painting would be a good way to fill in time while I was ill in bed. From that moment on Mum praised and encouraged me in any form of illustrating, painting or drawing.  I had stated to paint "The Path", when Mum passed away suddenly: The painting changed greatly from when she saw it and I finished it after she died.
     Mum O'Brien encouraged me by often coming with Jen and I when we went to exhibitions. My mother in-law Brenda O'Brien, knew the artists of the Willunga area from the pre war era: Mum told wonderful stories about Ivor Hele and Horace Trennery. Mum loved all her family greatly, including her son in-laws.  Mum OB, was very talented in embroidery, needle work, crocheting and tapestry.
     I'm lucky to have three Mums; Joyce Batty the founder of the "The Namatjira Memorial Art Prize" and author of the book "Namatjira, Wanderer Between Two World", took a number of young artists in hand and still watches over us today.  Mum also has helped me by viewing these works for exhibitions and giving love and support when needed.
