In Remembrance of
Johann Christian Mercklen 1678-1766
Johann was a Huguenot. He migrated to America seeking religious freedom and
economic opportunity in 1719. He traveled on the ship Phoenix to America from Amsterdam Holland, settled at Moselem Springs,
Pa. and purchasied land from W. Penn. Johann was a coach-maker, blacksmith, and grist mill operator. He had nine children:
Catherina, Apollonia, Anna Maria, Helena, Franzina, Peter, Christian, George, and Gaspard. His descendents surnames are: Markle,
Merkel, Markel, Mericle, and several other variations. We are of German descent.
