Chapter 1: New Acquaintances

Between the instant of the universe's creation and the beginning of time, there was darkness. Then there was a single, eternal second of light: the light of the newborn universe, come to take the place of the formless, enigmatic darkness.
But Darkness refused to leave.
So the essence of Darkness and Light took form, and they have been reborn for countless ages for an eternal battle, and the universe hangs in the balance of darkness and light. Maybe someday one of them will win. This time might be that time. This time they have been reborn on Earth. This time, there is one difference?.

It was the first day of school. Bekka's alarm clock rang for the third time. "Fine, I'm waking up!" she shouted, smacking it with a pillow. "Oh no! It's 7:30 already? I didn't think I hit the snooze button that many times!"
Bekka ran to school. "I hope I'm not late," she thought. She wasn't really looking where she was going and accidentally ran into someone.
"Oh no! I'm so sorry, I-"
"Please, don't worry about it," said the boy she'd run into. He had short black hair, looked about Bekka's age and was wearing the uniform of Bekka's school. "Do you go to Eien Academy?" he asked, noticing Bekka's uniform. She nodded. "Maybe we could walk there together. I'm new this year, and I wouldn't want to get lost."
"I-yes, I'd like that," stuttered Bekka. "Oh, ah, my name is Bekka, what's yours?"
"I'm Corinn," he replied. Corinn-what a nice-sounding name. Suddenly another boy ran up to them.
"So, there you are!" he shouted at Corinn. He looked exactly like Corinn, except his hair was white.
"Don't shout, Jarith," said Corinn calmly. "It's terribly impolite."
"I don't CARE if it's impolite! You've got a lot of nerve, Corinn, hiding on this world for-"
"Jarith! Have you forgotten the Rules? I haven't been Challenged yet, you have no right to lecture me like this."
"What are you two talking about?" asked Bekka, confused. They turned to look at her with identical startled expressions.
"I'd almost forgotten!" said Corinn. "Jarith, this is Bekka. Bekka, Jarith."
"Are you two brothers or something? I mean, you look so much alike and all?" asked Bekka.
"Not exactly," said Corinn. "I suppose you could say we're?cousins, of a sort. But we haven't seen each other for years, isn't that right, Jarith?" Jarith looked as if he didn't want to acknowledge ANY relationship to Corinn.
"Oh?well, we should really get going! We can't be late on the first day of school!" said Bekka, walking quickly toward Eien Academy. Corinn and Jarith followed her, giving each other mean looks over Bekka's head.

Bekka ate lunch out in the picnic area. She looked for Corinn but didn't see him anywhere. " I wonder where he could be?" she wondered out loud.
"Where who could be?" asked a voice behind her.
"What?! Oh, it's you, Kiara," Bekka said to the newcomer, her best friend. "Uh, what are you doing here?"
"Eating lunch, silly! Now, who were you looking for? Hmmm?"

"Oh, uh, no one! Just some guy I met on the way to school!"
"Really? 'Just some guy?' I think someone has a boyfriend!"
"No! No! Really, I just met him this morning! And he was acting kind of strange, too? They both were."
"Both?" Kiara giggled. "I think someone has TWO boyfriends!"
"KIARA! Stop it!" Bekka said, blushing. "I do not! I'm way too busy to have a boyfriend, you know that!"
"Oh, sure, Miss I'm-in-all-the-advanced-classes-so-I'm-too-busy. That excuse is getting old, you know."
"I just met them. And I told you, they're really strange," said Bekka, still blushing.

Bekka walked into room 308 for her last class that day. She still hadn't seen Corinn anywhere. She sat down towards the back of the room. "I wonder if I'll see them again?I don't have a crush on Corinn?even if he is kind of cute?" she said to herself.
The bell to begin class rang. The teacher stood up. "Welcome to geometry class. I am Mrs. Taylor; I'll be your teacher this year. Today we're going to-" Two boys walked in, late. They were Corinn and Jarith. "You're five minutes late!" said Mrs. Taylor sternly. "I'll let it go this time, since it's the first day, but if you're late one more time, you'll be staying after school."
Corinn looked around. He saw Bekka and sat down next to her. "So, we meet again, my lady." Jarith glared at him and sat on the other side of Bekka.
"As I was saying," continued Mrs. Taylor, "today I will be passing out books. You will get your first homework assignment tomorrow. The first test is scheduled for next week Thursday?"
Finally, the bell for the end of class rang. Bekka ran out to her locker. She had to get home quickly for her after-school flute lessons.
"Bekka, wait!" said Corinn.
"Y-yes?" said Bekka.
"I was wondering if you would like me to walk you home after school today. I'd like to get to know you a little better," he said.
"I-I'd like that. A lot," replied Bekka, blushing. 'Oh no, that probably sounded really stupid. What am I saying? I'm acting like I really do have a crush on him?I don't! Really!' she thought to herself.
Jarith stood a few feet behind them, frowning. 'I've got to tell her to stay away from him. He's not supposed to interfere with the people of this universe. And I don't want her to get caught in the middle when I do Challenge him?.'
