Uploading Your Pages

Once you've completed your web pages you'll have to upload them to your internet site. To do this you will normally need an FTP program. There are a number of such programs around, including such well-known ones as CuteFTP, FTP Explorer and WS-FTP. This last one is available in a free version (WS-FTP Limited Edition) which can be downloaded from my Download Page.

Setting Up the FTP Program

Before you can upload your pages you must configure the FTP program. I'm assuming here that you're using WS-FTP, but the same sort of steps need to be taken with any FTP program.

Start the program, and you'll then see the Session Properties dialog box (if you don't, click the Connect button at the top left-hand corner of the main screen):

Click the New button at the top right-hand corner of the dialog box and follow these steps:

  • Type a name in the Profile Name box to identify the session (probably the name of your service provider).
  • Press the Tab key on the keyboard (or click in the Host Name/Address edit box) and type in the address of your site. This address will be given to you by your service provider and will be something like homepages.isp_name.com.
  • The Host Type box should be set to Automatic detect -- if it isn't, click the button beside the box and select it from the drop-down list.
  • Click in the User ID box and type your username. Again, this will have been given to you by your service provider, or you may have been asked to choose one for yourself when you set up the account with your service provider.
  • Make sure that the Anonymous check box is not ticked (if it is, click it to uncheck the box).
  • In the Password box, type your password (once more, this will be given to you by your service provider if you didn't choose one yourself).
  • If the Save Pwd check box isn't ticked, click it to select it.
  • Click the Apply button at the bottom of the dialog box.

Uploading the Files

You are now ready to upload your pages. Connect to the internet and then click the OK button at the bottom of the Session Properties dialog box. You will see messages at the bottom left-hand corner of the main screen as the FTP program connects to your service provider and signs in with your user name and password. Once connection is completed you can start uploading.

If necessary, change directory shown on the left-hand side of the main window to the one where you pages are stored. Then select the pages (and images -- don't forget them!) that are to be uploaded. The picture below shows three files selected for uploading:

Click the button marked --> in the centre of the main window. Your files will now be uploaded one at a time. Once uploading is complete, the list of files on your site (in the right-hand part of the main screen) will be updated. Click the Close button at the top left-hand corner of the main window to end the session.

Now, with your first set of pages uploaded (don't forget to check that they're OK by browsing your site), would be a good time to think about a strategy for Managing Your Site.
