I have
chosen the Coca Cola world wide web page because I wanted to talk not
only about a subject everyone would already have heard about, but also
because Coca Cola ads are generally very good and creative, so I thought
the company's site might also be. The address of this web page is http://www.cocacola.com/gateway.html.
This page allows us to access the Coca Cola site by means of different
links. The company's site informs us about anything that has to do with
the Coca Cola company.
The background
is in two different shades of red. Our attention is immediately drawn
to the Coca Cola traditional picture, which is a bottle containing coke
(the brown colour of the liquid inside the bottle). The bottle is slightly
tilted to the left and has either just been opened or the coke inside
is bursting out, causing drops and bubbles to fly out. We assume the
bottle is made out of glass, because there are a few reflections of
green on it.
However,
the entire bottle does not appear because it is cut off by a long horizontal
strand extending itself to approximatively the middle of the page. Five
separate and different pictures, moving from left to right one after
the other and side by side, compose the strand. Each picture disappears
at its turn arriving at the end of the strand, and then reappears where
the strand begins. Three of these pictures are links, and different
messages appear in little white font if you keep the cursor over them.
The first
one is probably computer made, because it is a drawing of the Coca Cola
mascott, the polar bear giving coke to his two cubs on either side of
him. The picture's message is: "Bringing it home", which probably
means parents must bring coke home to their children because coke is
for the whole family.
I can't
really figure out what the second picture represents, but I believe
it is a hand holding up an electronic device. Its message is: "It's
your show" and has something to do with Blockbuster awards.
The third
picture shows Lance Armstrong smiling and standing on the left, wearing
a black cap frontwards and a white T-shirt. On his left you see the
shadow of a person carrying the olympic flame. The message says: "Help
carry the olympic flame to Salt Lake", because it is actually a
link that allows you to nominate the most inspiring person to be a torch
bearer in the Salt Lake city 2002 Olympic torch relay of which Coca
Cola is a "proud presenter".
There are
other links on this page located to the right of the Coca Cola glass
bottle situated on the left of the page. These links are written in
very little bright red letters, which are visible because the background
on that particular part of the page is of a darker shade of red. There
are actually four links written one under the other, which become of
a lighter yellow or beige when you roll your cursor over them. They
read: "about the company", "the investor relations",
"the latest news about Coke"and "the Coca-Cola store".
Also written in even smaller letters at the bottom left of the page,
side by side, are two hardly-distinguishable links: "Private Policy"and
"Copyright 1900 the Coca-Cola Company". By clicking on either
one of these six links you can obtain specific information about those
particular topics.
There is
also an animation on this page. In fact if you keep your cursor still
on the red background, some brown bubbles shoot out.
You have
the possibility to download the Coca-Cola Screen Saver by clicking on
the Coke bottle cap.
There is
really no text whatsoever on this page, beside the little six links.
On the other hand, by clicking on those links you are completely informed
about how the Company works. The only information that could be used
by just about everyone is the information regarding the Olympics or
the Blockbuster awards, because the rest of the information the site
offers is more of a business interest than personal interest. This site
appears to be for adults due to its information. The front page, however,
could easily appeal to children since there are drawings, animations
and also the drawing of the polar bear family. I also think this page
shouldn't attract one specific age group since everybody drinks coke.
I personally
believe that coke being a beverage for all ages, there could be more
information, links or even contests appealing for children. Having been
created for advertising reasons, this site probably would have been
more effective if it had been also attractive to children and teenagers.
However,
I find this page very creative and original. Everything on it is on
the left half of the page, which definitely changes form most pages
which are centered. It is a simple page that does not take too much
space but which introduces and gives a good idea about what you will
be able to find on the entire site. Having used red as the dominating
colour was a very smart choice since red has in fact been Coca Cola's
traditional colour throughout the ages.
In conclusion,
this page is very interesting. It is probably not very appropriate for
me, unless I wanted to do some research on the company. This page is
certainly aesthetic but I do not think I would really recommend it to
someone.
