Subject: text from 2001/11/06 Euro Lang Teachers-"This is Our Time" (#60347) PhilB asks, "I've started the recorder, would you like to introduce yourself for the record?" PhilB . o O ( we usually begin with introductions ) ClaudeC has arrived. ClaudeC's personal recorder (recording) has arrived. PhilB exclaims, "Bonsoir, Claude!" ClaudeC says, "Bonsoir Phil" BeeD says, "Nice to see you Claude..." ClaudeC says, "Hello," PhilB says, "I'll begin..." PhilB [WebTeach] projects Intro. --------------- Philip Benz teaches English and does teacher training in web-based learning in the Ardeche region of central France. --------------- BeeD says, "ok" PhilB asks, "Claude & Bee, can you introduce yourselves?" ClaudeC teaches English at collge lyce Lamartine in Paris BeeD says, "Barbara Dieu is the Foreign Language Coordinator and EFL teacher at the Lyce Pasteur, Sao Paulo, Brazil" ClaudeC says, "I used BeeD's idea and taught my students the lines from Macbeth." PhilB says, "OK, Bee, what is your topic tonight? Bee (Barbara) is our guest speaker on tonights Euro Language Teachers Forum." ClaudeC says, "Had them guess who wrote the lines..." BeeD smiles, steps forward and greets participant(s) BeeD says, "Thank you Phil for inviting me to participate in this Forum and giving me the opportunity to introduce This is Our Time project." BeeD says, "Id like to rectify the Barbara Dieu's "This is Our Time" project which appeared on the e-mail announcement." PhilB [WebTeach] listens BeeD says, "Many at school refer to it this way because I started it here with my classes and I have been helping to promote it. but Id like to make it very clear that the project is not mine" PhilB asks, "I wasn't sure just what to write, sorry if it's not quite accurate. I assume it's a collaborative project?" BeeD says, "So let me give you the official introduction and due recognition." PhilB exclaims, "great!" BeeD projects the URL: http://www.timeproject.org/default.html PhilB asks, "So, what should we look at first?" BeeD says, "This is our Time" is an annual, global telecommunications project for secondary schools initiated in 1995 for the UNESCO Associated Schools Project (ASPnet)." BeeD says, "It is supervised by an International Task Force, comprised of delegations of UNESCO ASP, Netherlands National Commission for UNESCO, Fontys University of Professional Education and managed by e-linQ, in the Netherlands" BeeD projects the URL: http://www.timeproject.org/information/information.htm PhilB asks, "So, is it fair to say you were one of the founders of the project? Or did you join along the way?" BeeD says, "I joined it along the way...in 1999 in fact" BeeD says, "would you please click on headquarters (left column ..last line of participants)" BeeD asks for a round of applause and raises a toast to Alexandra Smeets ,Wim Didderen and their team in Holland PhilB [WebTeach] claps wildly. PhilB asks, "So, what do people actually do, using this site?" BeeD asks, "could you now please click on list of HB further down?" BeeD says, "Let me explain how it is structured" PhilB says, "Wow, quite a diverse project base." DavidW has arrived. BeeD says, "e-linQ works closely with ten regional home bases around the world which have a central place within the Time Project so that the different activities are better adapted to each country or region.so as you see.the Lyce Pasteur is the home base for French-speaking countries" PhilB asks, "Bee, isn't that a little paradoxical that Brazil is the home base for French speaking countries?" BeeD says, "so the beauty of it is that it has a local dimension as well as an international and multicultural one" BeeD says, "yes...specially when you think of an EFL teacher of Polish origin, married to a Belgian, teaching in Brazil and having her school representing French-speaking countries" DavidW exclaims, "Wow!" DavidW says, "I love Brazil" BeeD says, "this is how the world is now today...and the web is just wonderful for this" PhilB [WebTeach] sorry to interrupt, Bee. This sounds like a great project - so what do students and teachers actually do? BeeD says, "smiles and claps her hands energetically" BeeD says, "lets get down to brass tacks. Id like you to work a bit on it" BeeD projects the URL: http://school.discovery.com/quizzes/cc_bdieu/timepro.html BeeD asks, "can you open it? Claude's off?" ClaudeC has connected. PhilB exclaims, "Aha! a project knowledge quiz!" PhilB asks, "Claude, shall I show you the page?" ClaudeC says, "Please, let's try again..." PhilB asks, "Or would it be best for you to type it into a new window yourself?" PhilB [WebTeach] shows ClaudeC the URL: http://school.discovery.com/quizzes/cc_bdieu/timepro.html ClaudeC says, "I'm still here " BeeD says, "As you go about it feel free to ask me whatever you wish to know" DebBl has arrived. DebBl's personal recorder (recording) has arrived. DavidW waves to DebBl. PhilB exclaims, "Bonsoir, Deb!" PhilB exclaims, "So glad to see you here!" DebBl says, "Hello from the USA...Bonsoir, Phil" BeeD says, "Welcome Deb" DavidW [to DebBl]: "Bonjour" PhilB says, "Let's pause in the presentation - I'm not sure if our guest speaker, Bee, has met David and Deb yet." PhilB asks, "David & Deb, can you briefly introduce yourselves?" PhilB . o O ( for the record, if nothing else? ) BeeD says, "DWJB...hi ;-)" DavidW says, "I help teachers learn more about the Internet and computers. My name is David Weksler" DebBl says, "I'm a French teacher in Indiana and author of 3 books (so far) on teaching a foreign language. My class and Phil's have been "meeting" on the Viv@ site." BeeD winks DavidW . o O ( Viv@? ) DavidW grins. ClaudeC has lost her link. DavidW says, "Zut!@" PhilB says, "Deb, Bee is the teacher from Brazil whose students invaded the Viva village over the last few weeks. " DavidW smiles. BeeD says, "Oh another coincidence" DavidW nods knowingly at BeeD. DebBl exclaims, "Oh Bee -- it was great to see they had visited! The more the merrier!" KathyWa has arrived. KathyWa's personal recorder (recording) has arrived. PhilB says, "David, Viva is another web project, but let's go back to Bee's project." BeeD says, "Have a go at the quiz" ClaudeC has connected. DavidW waves to KathyWa. PhilB says, "Bonsoir, Kathy, Bee was just going to continue her presentation of the "This is our time" project." BeeD says, "Hi Kathy" PhilB says, "Bee, I got 60% on the quiz. Should've read the sites, I guess." KathyWa says, "Hi, please continue"" BeeD asks, "Any questions?" PhilB asks, "Bee, so this project is mainly designed to encourage student writing, and exchanges with distant partners?" BeeD says, "Yes and no...it's basically getting a community around the school...and reaching further" PhilB says, "I saw question 8 was "Writing activities for This is our Time project may include themes like: a day in the life of, a significant moment in my life, domestic violence, peace, environment, tolerance and the future as well as poems, e-mailing and forums for discussion."" BeeD says, "Yes..this is the international reach..." PhilB asks, "So when students write these things, is it mostly for internal consumption, or is it posted to distant partners?" BeeD says, "it is posted and discussed on the Time Project Day...or along the year" DebBl asks, "Sorry, since I joined late, is this all done in English by non-native speakers/writers?" PhilB . o O ( Deb, did you see the quiz about Bee's project? ) DebBl says, "no" PhilB [WebTeach] shows DebBl the URL: http://school.discovery.com/quizzes/cc_bdieu/timepro.html BeeD says, "Yes...non-native..." BeeD says, "and they are translating the site into French, Spanish, Russian and very soon Indonesian" PhilB asks, "Bee, aren't some of your students native French speakers who live in Brazil?" BeeD says, "Some are...but the large majority are Franco-Brazilians" DebBl exclaims, "What a wonderful theme!" PhilB [WebTeach] nods PhilB [WebTeach] wonders if anyone else has other questions before I ask about results. BeeD says, "I got hooked on this project for all the scope of activities it offers...and you can work in interdisciplinarity with other teachers" DebBl asks, "Is this done during class time or as homework, or both?" BeeD says, "Class Time and homework" DebBl asks, "Do you grade it or just discuss?" BeeD says, "on an everyday basis...little by little...step by step" BeeD says, "some work is graded...well I use rubrics for group/oral/writt en participation" PhilB asks, "Are any of your rubrics online, Bee?" KathyWa asks, "are the rubrics on the site as well?" DebBl asks, "What classes would you link this to, interdisciplinarily?" BeeD says, "Let me see...I think there is one" BeeD says, "Well...all aspects of Time can be linked to Physics, Maths, Geography, Arts (design a clock)" PhilB [WebTeach] nods about the interdisciplinary angle. KathyWa asks, "What grade levels can this be done with?" BeeD says, "I do the Unite the Nations Game with my 13-14 year old students...they do it in French or Portuguese...then bring it to the English class...we go online and try to find nice [examples] of text to wrap around" BeeD asks, "have you had a look at the Unite the Nations Game on the quiz?" KathyWa asks, "no, not yet. It is in the quiz area?" PhilB asks, "I see that in 2000, your big "Time Day" was on Nov 16th. And this year?" KimberlyZ has arrived. Kim's Scribe (recording) has arrived. BeeD says, "November 16th again...International Day for Tolerance" BeeD says, "Unfortunately, we won' be online...our proviseur did not think this was a good reason to miss a long weekend" PhilB asks, "Well, that's coming up pretty soon! WHat activities do you have planned?" KathyWa asks, "Unite the Nations link is not working, does anyone know the URL?" PhilB says, "Ah, true, bad luck that it's over a holiday period for you." BeeD says, "We will be online a week before though...and a week after..." BeeD projects the URL: http://school.discovery.com/quizzes/cc_bdieu/TimeSports.html KathyWa says, "THANK YOU" KimberlyZ says, "hello all" KimberlyZ says, "sorry for lurking about" PhilB asks, "I found the teachers information page, with a link where we could join the project. Shall I project after we look at this sports quiz?" BeeD says, "welcome Kimberly" PhilB says, "No problem, Kim. Feel free to lurk, or participate." DebBl says, "Yes, Phil, please do that...but give me a minute more to look at the rubric." BeeD projects the URL: http://the_english_dept.tripod.com/classrubric.html DebBl says, "Oh, it's not a rubric, just a quiz." DebBl says, "[to Kim] welcome" PhilB exclaims, "Ah, the rubric! of course!" BeeD asks, "have you got it?" PhilB says, "Yes, I got it. I like the first criterion, about consulting with the teacher." PhilB asks, "Do some rubrics include items for group work and collaboration?" BeeD says, "this is not a rubric for this project though...this was for an article for our online newspaper" BeeD says, "I do have some...but they are closed in Blackboard...can pass them on to you later" PhilB says, "OK, great." DebBl asks, "What is your newspaper's address?" PhilB says, "We're closing in on the end of our time... but since we started late, perhaps Bee would agree to go over a bit." BeeD projects the URL: http://www.newsandmedia.hik.se/paper_online/workspace/linked.php3?paper_i d=88 PhilB asks, "European Schoolnet - is that based in Sweden?" BeeD says, "Yes...I was with Highwired net before...but they were having a lot of problems and losing my material...so I switched to this one" PhilB says, "This looks like a great resource - I'd like to know how to sign up to have my students create their own paper in their target language." KathyWa asks, "What was the name of this session so I can try to catch it again?" PhilB says, "I tried the link to European Schoolnet from the paper, but it's password protected." PhilB says, "Kathy, this is the "Euro Language Teachers Forum."" BeeD says, "Just copy the first part of the address" PhilB exclaims, "OK, thanks!" KathyWa says, "Thank you" PhilB asks, "Are we ready to see the teachers information page from Bee's project?" BeeD says, "yes..." PhilB [WebTeach] wonders if anybody else is ready for a new projection. ClaudeC says, "Yes, just hoping I don't get disconnected again..." PhilB says, "OK, let's risk it. " PhilB [WebTeach] projects the URL: http://www.timeproject.org/information/information_p1.htm PhilB says, "I saw that at the bottom of the page, there is a link to an online registration form." BeeD says, "Which I invite you all to fill in ..." PhilB says, "Yes, this looks like an ambitious and useful project." PhilB says, "Before everyone leaves, I'd also like to stick in a few words about upcoming sessions..." BeeD says, "I love the idea behind it...the values...and the reaching out and opening up to the community" PhilB says, "next week we will have Helmut Brammerts, head of the Tandem Network for student exchanges." PhilB says, "And in 3 weeks we'll have Ton Koenraad, who'll speak about his WebQuest project in the Netherlands." BeeD says, "Yes...and do not forget to have a look at the last question in my quiz about Time Project...I' like to have some feedback on it...by e-mail if you are interested" PhilB asks, "Any final questions for Bee?" PhilB says, "Remember, the transcript of this session, as well as all past sessions of the Euro Language Teachers Forum, are available here in the "ASO" room of Tapped In within a few days of the session date." PhilB says, "Bee, thank you so much for coming. We got off to a slow start, but this was a great project to present." BeeD says, "thank you very much Phil and all who came...I hope you found it useful." PhilB says, "I know I did. I hope in the future we can have you again, perhaps to show us some student work from this project, and more of your evaluation rubrics." BeeD says, "And I hope Phil you can talk about Viva sometime" PhilB says, "Yes, I have already, but since it is growing so fast, I think I should again." PhilB says, "Bee, you and Deb and I should talk about things we'd like to do with our students." BeeD says, "My students came with a lot of drawings this morning...which I asked them to put to writing" DebBl asks, "Drawings of what?" BeeD says, "Of the Copabacana Club" DebBl says, "Ah..." PhilB [WebTeach] hasn't used drawing in class before... hmmm... DebBl says, "Ditto..." PhilB asks, "Bee, have any of the CDDP people working on the Viva project contacted you directly?" PhilB says, "You may have noticed that there are 3 new areas for primary students." BeeD says, "Not yet...haven' been there today..." PhilB says, "And I talked to an ESL teacher from Hungary this week who seemed keen on participating." PhilB . o O ( new as of about 10 days ago. ) BeeD says, "Oh? I'm in contact with Hungary as well" PhilB says, "Also, several ESL teachers in Guadeloupe and Martinique have expressed interest, but they seem to be less ready to actually go online just now." DebBl exclaims, "Well, lurking isn't all that bad...eventually they'll want to add something!" PhilB says, "Deb, you'll have to explain that some students try to push things beyond acceptable limits - tell them about my class that had their internet privilieges removed for 2 months." BeeD says, "Well...I have a huge group with my 3emes...and most of them are very keen on it...even the ones who were lagging behind made an effort to leave a message" DebBl says, "I noticed, Bee, and was happy to see all the postings. And yes," BeeD smiles PhilB says, "So far I have given little content guidance, really let students say what they wanted, but one class has started to build a family in the residential area." BeeD asks, "How long have you been on it, Deb?" BeeD asks, "Oh...literally?" DebBl says, "oops, hit return -- My students understand the language situation, it just shocks a bit; this is a conservative group right now." PhilB asks, "Deb and I worked together on several simpler message board projects. How long? 2 years?" DebBl says, "Bee, I've been doing Internet things for 2 years, but this is the first Viv@ year." PhilB [WebTeach] smiles at Bee, "No, just literarily." BeeD says, "virtually then ;-)" DebBl says, "Phil's class and mine also met "Live" twice last year. That was exciting to the students." PhilB says, "The Viva project is sort of an outgrowth of our story project from last year." PhilB asks, "Deb, do you want to meet "live" this month?" PhilB asks, "What time is it for you, Deb?" DebBl says, "We could. Right now it's 4:19 PM" PhilB says, "Here it is 22h20" BeeD says, "I had a connection like this...a teacher from California who worked with me for 2 years...and then we went to visit the USA with 45 stds" PhilB says, "OK, that's 6 hours." DebBl says, "Yes, we never moved our clock." PhilB says, "I'd like to do real travel some day, but it is tough to plan & finance." DebBl says, "agree with Phil." BeeD says, "We were very lucky...at that time the real was 1 to 1 with the dollar" PhilB asks, "Deb, how about some Monday at 15h50-16h45?" BeeD says, "now it is almost 3 to 1" PhilB says, "That would be... 9:50 to 10:45AM" BeeD says, "well...must go" DebBl says, "Right now, I don't have a class then." DebBl says, "Thanks, BeeD. It was interesting! Good luck." PhilB says, "My best class has English at that time..." DebBl says, "Darn." PhilB exclaims, "Bonsoir, Bee!" PhilB exclaims, "A bientot!" BeeD says, "see you and thanks... by Deb" DebBl says, "Bye." BeeD has disconnected. PhilB says, "I can try for another similar time on another day..." PhilB says, "Our last class hour of the day is at 16h45-17h40" DebBl says, "My classes would be at you 14h15 to 15h40," PhilB says, "It would probably have to be a Monday or Tuesday, and I'd have to switch class times with a colleague." PhilB asks, "Really?" PhilB asks, "That early?" KimberlyZ has lost her link. DebBl says, "Any day is OK. And I only posted the first class. I'm doing the math." PhilB says, "OK, why don't I email you my schedule..." DebBl says, "Yes, 8:15 - 9:40 my time, and 11:40 - 3:15 is school." DebBl says, "Yes, send me yours, and I'll send you mine." PhilB says, "I have some classes at 13h50-14h45" PhilB says, "If I kept them for an extra hour, we could correspond to your times." PhilB says, "And that's a class that also participated last year." DebBl says, "We could try then (our school doesn't start until 14h10 your time)" PhilB says, "Which class do you have 14h15 to 15h10 (8:15 to 9:10)" DebBl says, "A 3rd-year class. 24, almost half boys." PhilB asks, "Would somewhere around 27 November be good?" PhilB asks, "Did some of those students participate last year?" DebBl says, "Sure. No, none of them were participants last year." PhilB . o O ( 3rd year is good! ) PhilB says, "OK, I'll look into getting my schedule shifted." DebBl says, "Not this 3rd year...most had a substitute teacher for French 2, and I'm trying to get them up to snuff." PhilB asks, "Any ideas on content or other issues?" PhilB . o O ( 3rd year is better than 1st year... ) PhilB asks, "Do you have any students who participated last year?" DebBl says, "True. I actually liked the "introduce yourself" part and then to switch languages every ten minutes or so." PhilB . o O ( not essential, but continuity is always nice. ) DebBl says, "I thought maybe we could have them each list five things they like to do, and see how many other people say they like that? But no, that wouldn't generate a lot more than me-too stuff." PhilB [WebTeach] nods PhilB says, "OK, we'll have to put on our thinking caps." PhilB asks, "Do you want them to talk about 911, or are you tired of that?" DebBl says, "I'll think about it some more. I think we're tired of 911." PhilB says, "Me too." PhilB says, "Sick to death of it. And it's far from over." DebBl says, "Good. That WAS good at the time, but it's rather old news." DebBl says, "Yes, far from over." PhilB says, "I'm keen on having my students produce a newspaper, that would be good for sharing about our schools." DebBl says, "I was glad to see the French journalist was released. Yes, we could be your "foreign correspondent" if you want." PhilB says, "The European Schoolnet Newspaper site looks simple & promising." PhilB asks, "Did you see the URL?" DebBl says, "Yes, I agree. Yes, and it'll be in the transcript, too, from my personal recorder." PhilB says, "it's at http://www.newsandmedia.hik.se/" PhilB says, "OK, any other comments? I should get offline." DebBl says, "I liked the fact that they archived the old articles, too. Yes, I need to go too. Good talking to you." PhilB says, "Maybe I should try to organize a chat of participating Viva teachers." DebBl asks, "Yes, that could be good, but hard to find a good time?" PhilB asks, "Suggestions?" DebBl says, "This time was OK for me, right after school ends." PhilB . o O ( not *tooo* late... ) PhilB asks, "Ah, so about 21h30... 3:30PM for you?" PhilB asks, "Tuesday?" DebBl says, "I meant the time when the Eurolanguage STARTED." PhilB asks, "21h - 3PM then?" DebBl says, "Any day but Thursday. I teach ESL that day." DebBl says, "Sure." PhilB asks, "Tuesday the 20th of November, perhaps?" DebBl says, "Sure." PhilB says, "I've got that day open." DebBl says, "Me too." PhilB exclaims, "OK, it's booked!" PhilB says, "I'm so glad we chatted here." PhilB says, "Email is so much slower." PhilB says, "Ciao."
