Background/History:
Joan Marie was a typical young woman with a kind heart and a desire to help
others less fortunate. Her father blamed it on her name and youthful interest in
Joan of Arc. He was a wealthy businessman with little interest in anything other
than business. Ironically, her desire to protect people and his greed clashed
over a plan to transport nuclear waste to Russia. She found out one of her
father’s companies was going to illegally ship the waste by truck to a dock
for shipping. She attempted to organize a protest which was blocked by the
authorities. Finally, she decided to take pictures of the illegal operation, but
she was recognized by one of the drivers. He stupidly attempted to run her off
the road and wrecked both her car and his truck. It should have been a major
disaster, but the Hazardous Materials crew discovered that the spilled
radioactive material which Joan was exposed to was mysteriously inert. However,
Joan was literally glowing and quite radioactive herself. Apparently, her latent
mutant ability was triggered by the accident and she absorbed the radiation. Her
father had numerous specialists test her and attempt to remove her powers, but
the best they could do was teach her to control them. She only gave off low
levels of measurable radiation, but discovered that she could use it to fire
atomic bursts and she was much more agile and quicker than ever. Her father was
angry with her refusal to use her powers commercially, but helped finance her
career as a superhero anyway. When Stunner founded the international Hero Club,
Glimmer became a member.
Personality/Motivations:
With her guilt complex regarding her wealth, Joan was determined to make a
difference. Her powers give her a unique chance to do just that, but the loss of
her hair has her afraid that there may be more of a price to pay than she first
suspected. She is very cautious of her powers going out of control and the
damage that could cause.
