Background/History:
Many centuries ago in the furthest reaches of the cosmos, there was a war that threatened to end the entire galaxy. A weapon was created to stop that conflict, a scepter of immense power called "Peacekeeper". It was made in six pieces, five gems and the scepter housing to hold the interlocking gems. The threat of the Peacekeeper was enough to end the battle, so it was dismantled and the pieces scattered though out space. Each gem had a specific sphere of influence, green controlled life and healing, yellow controlled light and energy, blue controlled matter and physical force, red controlled transformation and destructive force, and the last gem was a crystal with facets of the others. The crystalline gem was the capstone of the scepter and it focused the four together creating a cosmic power pool able to do virtually anything. As a precaution, the four gems were cursed with a life link to the person who touched them. The only way to rebuild the Peacekeeper would be to remove the gems from their holders which would cost their lives. Over the centuries, the gems reappeared. Starmaster found the scepter and embarked on a quest to rebuild the weapon. Alien archeologist/scientist Kahla Ro found the blue gem and became the villainous Darkmace. An amoeba-like space creature found the yellow gem and became known as Starburst. Eventually, Darkmace discovered the red gem and, with the power of two, attempted to get the yellow. The battle raged across the galaxy, until a mortally wounded Starburst crashed to Earth and an earthling recovered the gem becoming the hero known as Prism. The green gem mysteriously appeared on Earth, only months prior to the yellow, coming into the possession of the Attack Legion and creating the hero New Man.
The capstone had landed on Earth centuries ago as a meteorite that crashed deep into what would eventually become a diamond mine in South Africa. In the 1800's, a split formed in the Jackson family over the treatment of slaves and mine workers leading the youngest son to come to America where he settled down and started what became a sucessful jewelry store. Nearly 200 years later, George, his wife Cynthia, and young daughter Sherri went on a vacation trip to meet their distant relatives who still run the mines today. While touring the mine, Sherri stumbled over a strange gemstone sheathed in rock. They checked it out and it seemed to be some sort of odd quartz or something. It's weight and coloration made it clearly not a diamond or a valuable gem, so she kept it as a good luck piece. As time passed, strange things happened around Sherri when she wore the necklace they made for it, things she thought of would appear or happen inexplicably. Eventually she figured out that the gem made her thoughts and visualizations into reality and she became the heroine known as Gem Girl. The capstone is able to access all the abilities of the other four gems enabling Sherri to do virtually any power effect she can think of. She is especially fond of creating giant frying pans to hit villains with or butterfly nets to capture them.

Personality/Motivation:
As a child, Sherri was inspired by her mother's accounts of being in the Peace Corps and her social work in the neighborhood. They were well off, although not rich, and she appreciated it for the opportunities it afforded her to help the needy. She tutored younger children in school, worked soup kitchens on weekends and holidays, etc., gaining super-powers was yet another way for her to help people which lead her to join the Protectors.

Quote: “Yes, it's a giant frying pan! So what? ”
