Composer and conductor Professor Josefino Chino Toledo is a recognized figure in Asian contemporary art music and leads a new generation of contemporary artist who are establishing a new image for the Philippines in the international music scene. He is the Chairman of the Department of Composition and Theory at the University of the Philippines, College of Music; music director of chamber vocal ensemble AUIT and has conducted the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra in their subscription and special concerts. From 1985 to 1988, he was music director of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, As the artistic director of the 1997 Asian Composer's League Music Festival in Manila, he was cited for remarkably conducting the local premier of twenty contemporary music compositions during the week-long festival. Toledo was also critically praised for his conducting of premier performances of new works by Filipino composers during the Philippine Centennial Celebration and his performances are the 1998 Art Summit Festival in Indonesia. Toledo's own music include works for chorus, orchestra and chamber ensemble. His compositions have been performed in Europe, America and Asia - and features in several international music festivals such as the Focus! Gaudemus, Pacific Music Festival, Horizonte, Hong Kong Musicarama and the Asian Composer League Festivals. His music has been described as pure and powerful, and has been cited for it's fusion of contemporary western language and Southeast Asian aesthetics. Toledo's music I characterized by great energy and often bears a relationship to the traditional music of Arts, the Raymund Hubbell Award in Composition from ASCAP, Asian Cultural Council Grants, a French Government scholarship in composition, a Young Artists Foundation of the Philippines Award and numerous other awards. He has also received commissions from the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information, New Julliard Ensemble, Cultural Center of the Philippines, 22nd Century Club of Japan, Hong Kong Sinfonieta, NAMCYA, Kaszuhito Yamashita, Philippine Ballet Theater, and Ballet Philippines.
