George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars

Review 07/20/98 From: Dr.Brookenstein

At Wingate Field, Brooklyn (NYC) [free] I took a long subway trip from Midtown Manhattan to Flatbush, Brooklyn to see the "P" perform at Wingate Field. When I arrived at the venue, I was told that photography was strictly forbidden!! WHAT??!! I had to temporarily give up my two rolls of film before entering the field. (SHIT!!) Anyway, I had to endure about 40 minutes of agonizing, boring announcements and small talk by some politician. After a recital of the Lord's Prayer (led by Rev. Al Sharpton), the "P" landed at 8:20pm....the first tune was the funk classic "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)". Afterwards, Clip announced all of the band members and the band followed with the amazing, funked-up song "Funkentelechy". George Clinton appeared onstage at 8:40pm during the middle of the song. The song set listing: P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up) Funkentelechy (w/ "Let's Get Funky" and "Let's Take It To The Stage") Tear The Roof Off The Sucka Psychoticbumpschool Music Up For The Down Stroke (w/ "Get Off Your Ass and Jam", "Starchild", "Party Up in Here", "Let's Take It To The Stage") "We Want The Funk, Gotta Have The Funk" chant Music For My Mother If Anybody Gets Funked Up (It's Gonna Be You) Flashlight (w/ "Electric Spanking of War Babies" and "All Around The World for the Funk" chant) (Not Just) Knee Deep Sentimental Journey Rubber Duckie Disco-To-Go riff Somethin' Stinks and I Want Some Underground Angel Treylewd's rap U.S. Customs Coast Guard Dope Dog Hard To Let Go (Belita's tune) Maggot Brain Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication (instrumental) Dog Star Atomic Dog Hall of Fame riff / Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow (w/ "I Call My Baby Pussycat" and "Music For My Mother") Radio-Friendly DJs Spin For The Funk Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow HIGHLIGHTS: Mike Hampton and Lige Curry were ripping the shit out of "Maggot Brain". Mike's guitar riffs were super-heavy in psychedelic funk, and Lige's bass licks were a perfect match. Treylewd was actually at the Brooklyn show, performing a new, twisted rap tune. The lyrics contained lines like "Your mouth is a hotel, and my dick has a reservation"....some totally grossed-out shit!! For his rap tune, he also threw in his own guitar licks! For the Hall of Fame riff, Billy Bass performed bass guitar licks for the old Parliament classic "I Call My Baby Pussycat"-some great shit from the original funky bassist himself!! The funky horns (Greg Thomas, Bennie Cowan and Scott Taylor) performed the melody of "Music For My Mother"-the old classics are always beyond wonderful!! The Belita Woods tune "Hard To Let Go" was a fairly-bland R&B tune that just featured Skeet on bass, Blackbyrd on guitar, Scott on flute, and some new drummer that replaced Frank Waddy, temporarily. By the way, Scott's flute solo was excellent!! The show ended at 11:05pm, only 2 hours and 45 minutes of the "P"!!! P- Funk must be getting worn out these days!! They can't party like they used to! THE PLAYERS: George Clinton Sir Nose Kidd Funkadelic Clip Payne Scott Taylor Greg Thomas Bennie Cowan Billy Bass Cordell "Boogie" Mosson Razorsharp P-Nut Belita Woods Lige Shonda Treylewd Paul Hill Steve Boyd
