FIRST READING: Amos. 8: 4-7 "The Lord God spoke against those who buy the poor for money."
The Lord will never forget the swindling and dishonesty of oppression.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Ps. 113 "Praise the Lord, who raises the poor."
SECOND READING:
1 Tim. 2: 1-8 "Let prayers be offered to God for everyone; he wishes that all be saved. "
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
2 Cor. 8: 9 "Jesus Christ was rich but he became poor, to make you rich out of his poverty."
GOSPEL: Lk. 16: 1-13
"You cannot be servants of both God and money."
Jesus tells the parable of the rich man who dismisses his steward.
FOCUS: The riches of this world are fleeting and best used to further the kingdom.
REFLECTION: "Avarice is inordinate love of riches and the good things of this life. Jesus Christ , to cure us of it, was born in extreme poverty, deprived of all comforts. He chose a Mother who was poor. He willed to pass as the son of a humble workman." St. John Vianney
"The gift which we have received from Jesus Christ in holy baptism is not destroyed, but is only buried as a treasure in the ground. And both common sense and gratitude demand that we should take good care to unearth this treasure and bring it to light. This can be done in two ways. The gift of baptism is revealed first of all by a painstaking fulfillment of the commandments; the more we carry these out, the more clearly the gift shines upon us in its true splendour and brilliance. Secondly, it comes to light and is revealed through the continual invocation of the Lord Jesus, or by unceasing remembrance of God, which is one and the same thing. The first method is powerful but the second is more so; so much so that even fidelity to the commandments receives its full strength from prayer. For this reason, if we truly desire to bring to flower the seed of grace that is hidden within us, we should hasten to acquire the habit of this exercise of the heart, and always practise this prayer within it, without any image or form, until it warms our mind and inflames our soul with an inexpressible love towards God and men." St. Gregory of Sinai
APPLYING THE READINGS TO THE LITURGY: Introduce the liturgy with the suggestion that we pursue the kingdom with at least as much zeal as we pursue earthly treasures. As the enterprising servant won the favor of others, we too should use our grace and our talents to bring about spiritual harmony.
Sprinkling rite or
Penitential rite: Third form with second set of sample invocations
General Intercession-
Introduction:
My brothers and sisters, may all who follow Christ reject what is contrary to the gospel. Let us pray to God, who brings forth life from nothingness:
· For all those who gather together in the Holy Spirit of God, that they use their talents to bring about harmony;
· For peace among nations, that resources be diverted towards humani-taran purposes
· For the aged who suffer from loneliness and infirmity, that we will sustain them by our love, and committement;
· For all of us gathered here, that God will teach us to use our gifts to strengthen the kingdom of God.
Preface: Second or fourth for Sundays in Ordinary Time
Lord's Prayer: Fourth suggested introduction
Prayers over the People: First or sixteenth or
Solemn Blessing in Ordinary time: Fourth
Faith Formation
The enterprising servant in today's gospel is a symbol of our need to pursue the spiritual life with at least the zest with which we pursue our earthly treasures. People are fairly industrious when it comes to acquiring material wealth. Let us all increase our industry in the pursuit of the peaceful kingdom, God among us. Peace and harmony can be ours through love of God and All His Creation.
· In what ways does the pursuit of a spiritual life run at odds with the
pursuit of material riches in your life?
· How has the lure of wealth affected your decisions ?
Children's Liturgy of the Word
People who serve others serve God. There are many ways in which we can help bring about a better world.
The industrious servant tried to do something that helped others rather than hinder them. He was trying to serve them. However we choose to use our talents, we must work hard to help make the world a better place.
