FILL 'ER UP?
Our perceptions of the past are often distorted by the somber realities of the present.  This accounts, in part, for our tendency to over-romanticize 'the way things were' and to yearn for the days when the world was just a little less complicated.

And yet, in talking with people who grew up in say, the 1930's, one begins to suspect that although the times were difficult, there was a much stronger sense of community than exists today.

People had time - or rather made time - to visit with their neighbours, and perhaps impromptu visits - at the cafe, the barber shop or the corner service station - were the most cherished of all.

No doubt people were just as busy, but never too busy to show that they cared, nor too proud to admit that they needed one another.

In that regard, perhaps the world truly was a more hospitable place - in days, alas, gone by.
