Lyrical Words

Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting through my open mind
Possessing and caressing me

from The Beatles' "Across The Universe"

The following pages contain just a taste of each artist's work, some full songs, but mostly just selected lines. Selected by me, of course, so I'm fully prepared for you Dylan fans or Oasis groupies to e-bomb me ... I'd rather you wouldn't though.

Music has always been a part of my life. I spent my childhood travelling with my parents' band, sitting in the front seat of our blue Chevy, listening to country and western music on the radio and inhaling the smoke from my father's cigars. There's a pleasant thought, huh? Anyway, as I got older, I discovered other stations on the radio.

In '73, I was bored and asked my babysitter (I was 9) if she had any good music to listen to. She was a pretty hip gal. She handed me two albums from this "great new guy" named Elton John. "Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player" and "Madman Across The Water". Fate had me choose the second one to listen to first on my cheap little record player (kids, ask your parents). I had to put a quarter on the needle arm to hold it down. So, I jammed the record onto the spindle (man, we were so rough with those things) and started to absorb the sound of a piano. Just a piano, then a man's voice joined in.

As I sat there, the album's jacket laid out before me, engrossed in the artwork (it looked exactly like denim material with all the writing in neat rows of hand-stitching, really quite something, it's a shame CDs have killed this artform), I began a long love affair with music and Elton John in particular.

Just like most of you, I have certain memories that flood back when I hear a particular song. And a lot of songs just touch me somewhere and become memories. Here are a few of the ones I've enjoyed, I hope you do too. And, heck, even if you are a Dylan or Oasis fan, email me if there's something you feel I'm missing tinyd@bell.net.

The name of that first Elton song I heard?
100 points if you said, "Tiny Dancer".
