Sorry to say, but this was the first disappointing book of the year. Too bad, because Hornby is a truly great writer (I know this now because I had no prior idea of what the book would be like, or the dialogue, or anything at all, and it was still a surprising, genius quality work).
It was just too silly. GoodNews, the spiritual healer who gets hot hands that heals people and strips them of sadness was, I hate to say it, stupid. It was a great read about a woman who wants a divorce from her mean spirited, angry husband, and about halfway through it's degenerated into a sappy story about saving the poor and being Good.
Sorry. It was dumb. I loved the kid, Tom, however. Great character. Very real. The rest were a bit too contrived for me.
If you want to read some Hornby, pick up something else. "About A Boy" is next!
