Gregorian Chants - Commercial Project
Music Module II - Humanities

Introduction:

For over 1,000 years, the official music of the Roman Catholic Church has been the Gregorian Chant. The chants are still sung today in the cathedrals of Europe, though not as popular as during the Middle Ages, and continue to set the atmosphere for prayers and ritual actions. The intention of this activity is to find a contemporary setting for the Gregorian Chant used in a most unusual medium: a radio or television advertisment.

The Assignment:

Group yourself by pairs (individual work is allowed). Conceptualize and write the script for a 30-second television or radio advertisement that will make use of a Gregorian Chant whether in full or in part. You have the liberty of selecting your own product (foreign or local) available in groceries or supermarkets, and the endorser for your product (any celebrity). Afterwards, write a short explanation why you used the chant in that certain scene, with that certain product, and with that certain endorser, always bearing in mind the characteristics of the Gregorian Chant.

Please refrain from using scenes that have reference to the following:

bulletThe Middle Ages (royalty, castles, knights, etc.)
bulletChristianity (priests, nuns, churches, etc.)
bulletDeath (the dead, cemeteries, zombies, heaven, hell, etc.)

The script will be submitted using the following format:

bullet8.5" x 11" paper
bullet1" margin on all sides
bullet1.5 Paragraph Spacing
bulletTimes New Roman, 12, Arial or Tahoma 11

The paper is worth 31 points:

bulletProduct & Endorser Selection (3 Points)
bulletStoryline (13 Points)
bulletApplication of Rules (2 Points)
bulletAppropriateness of Usage (2 Points)
bulletJustification (7 Points)
bulletCorrect Format (4 Points)

ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE GIVEN ON OCTOBER 16, 2003. LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!
