BRACEGIRDLE, John. Born in Ashley, Cheshire circa 1753. Married Elizabeth Wainwright 2 August 1775 at St. Mary's Parish Church, Bowdon they had four children that we know of. Elizabeth was born circa 1754 in Ashley. John was a farmer at Blackshaw Hey's Farm, Bowdon. John died c1828 in Cheshire.

BRACEGIRDLE, Betty. Baptised 9 November 1777 at Bowdon Parish Church.

BRACEGIRDLE, Ann. Baptised 7 March 1779 at Bowdon Parish Church.

BRACEGIRDLE, John. Baptised 23 March 1783 at Bowdon Parish Church. John was a farmer at the time of his marriage to Hannah Hobson on 13 June 1804 at Bowdon Parish Church. The transcripts give John's surname as Brassgirdle at the time of his marriage and at the time of his son William's birth. Hannah was born circa 1785 in Bowdon and died circa 1832, they had nine children that we are aware of. John's second marriage was to Charlotte Bealey 23 November 1833 at St. Mary's Parish Church, Stockport, they had six children that we are aware of. At the time of the 1851 census, John was assistant gamekeeper and living at Blackshaw Hey's Farm, Bowdon. John died December quarter 1869 in Macclesfield, Cheshire.

BRACEGIRDLE, William. Born 15 February 1805 in Ashley, baptised 10 March 1805 at Bowdon Parish Church. William was a master wheelwright, he married Ellen Walton 5 August 1835 at Manchester Cathedral, they had four children that we know of. William and Ellen lived at 1 Trafalgar Place, Ordsall Lane, Salford. Ellen died circa 1851.

BRACEGIRDLE, Joseph. Born 6 April 1807 in Ashley, baptised 10 May 1807 at Bowdon Parish Church. Joseph was a blacksmith, he married Mary Clay 6 April 1828 in Rainow and they had six children that we are aware of. Joseph died 12 April 1892 in Rainow. Mary was born in Bollington circa 1808 and died circa 1882.

BRACEGIRDLE, John. Born 25 January 1810, baptised 4 March 1810 at Bowdon Parish Church.

BRACEGIRDLE, Joshua. Baptised 19 September 1813 at Bowdon Parish Church.

BRACEGIRDLE, Mary. Baptised 16 June 1816 at Bowdon Parish Church.

BRACEGIRDLE, Caleb. Baptised 7 March 1819 at Bowdon Parish Church. Caleb was a wheelwright, he married Mary Burrows 8 November 1840 in Eccles and they had one child that we are aware of, John, born circa 1841, baptised 8 September 1841 at Manchester Cathedral. Caleb and Mary arrived in NSW 8 July 1858 on board "The Queen Of England". Caleb died circa 1865 in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia.

BRACEGIRDLE, Hannah. Baptised 22 September 1822 at Bowdon Parish Church.

BRACEGIRDLE, Elizabeth. Baptised 19 September 1824 at Bowdon Parish Church.

BRACEGIRDLE, Thomas. Baptised 23 September 1828 at Bowdon Parish Church. Thomas was a beer retailer and wheelwright, the name of his first wife is not known but their child Elizabeth was born circa 1852. His second marriage was to Emily Wheatley 15 October 1853 at Cannon Street Chapel, Manchester, they had three children that we are aware of. At the time of the 1861 census, Thomas was living at 333 Rochdale Road, Manchester.

Children of William Bracegirdle and Ellen Walton:-

BRACEGIRDLE, William. Baptised 17 July 1836 at Manchester Cathedral. William was a wheelwright, he married Elizabeth Ann Wrigley, daughter of John Wrigley, 25 December 1864 at Manchester Cathedral, they had five children that we are aware of. William and Elizabeth Ann lived at 10 West Peel Street, Salford. William had a smithy of which there is a replica at Peel Park Museum, Salford, he died 21 September 1905 in Salford.

BRACEGIRDLE, Hannah. Baptised 4 April 1838 at Manchester Cathedral. Hannah married William Sandiford (possibly in Salford, circa 1856) he was born circa 1834 in Manchester and was a carter, they had five children that we are aware of. At the time of the 1881 census they were living at 83 West Union Street, Salford.

BRACEGIRDLE, Mary. Baptised 12 April 1840 at Manchester Cathedral.

BRACEGIRDLE, Jonathan. Baptised 4 May 1842 at Manchester Cathedral. Jonathan was a wheelwright, he was married to Mary Ellen Kerfoot. Jonathan and Mary Ellen lived at 89 West Union Street, Salford, they had one child that we are aware of. Apart from the fact that Jonathan died circa September 1889 in Salford we have no further information.

BRACEGIRDLE, Samuel. Born circa 1837 in Rainow. Samuel was a blacksmith, he was married to Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) who was born circa 1838 in Bollington, they had four children that we are aware of.

BRACEGIRDLE, Harriet. Born circa 1840 in Rainow.

BRACEGIRDLE, Elizabeth. Born circa 1842 in Rainow. Elizabeth was a cotton reeler.

BRACEGIRDLE, Sarah. Born circa 1845 in Rainow. Sarah, a dressmaker, married a Mr. Stott, first name not known.

BRACEGIRDLE, Joseph. Born circa 1848 in Rainow.

Children of Thomas Bracegirdle and Emily Wheatley:-

BRACEGIRDLE, John William. Born 27 July 1854, baptised 14 January 1866 at Manchester Cathedral. John William was a farmer, he married Ann Jones (daughter of David Jones, a weaver of Little Bolton) 9 July 1876 at the Parish Church of Bolton. Ann was born circa 1848 and died in 1913. John and Ann had one child that we are aware of, Nellie, born 28 June 1877 at 23 Regent Street, Salford and baptised at St. George's Church, Manchester. Nellie married Frederick Earnest Gillingham of Kirkham, 12 December 1901 in Manchester and in the same year moved to Fleetwood, Lancashire.

BRACEGIRDLE, Emily Louise. Born circa 1858, her birth was registered 29 July 1858, baptised 14 January 1866 at Manchester Cathedral.

BRACEGIRDLE, Hannah. Born 7 August 1861, baptised 14 January 1866 at Manchester Cathedral.

All three children were baptised at the same ceremony.

Children of William Bracegirdle and Elizabeth Ann Wrigley:-

BRACEGIRDLE, William. Born 25 December 1865, baptised 1 April 1866 at Manchester Cathedral.

BRACEGIRDLE, Elizabeth. Born 25 March 1868, baptised 6 September 1868 at Manchester Cathedral. Elizabeth lived her whole life at 10 West Peel Street, Salford, staying a spinster, she died at home, 14 January 1935. Elizabeth left the proceeds of her will to the Manchester Children's Hospital, St. Mary's Hospitals, and the Manchester and Salford Sick, Poor and Private Nursing Institution.

BRACEGIRDLE, Ellen. Born 26 March 1870, baptised 13 November 1870 at Manchester Cathedral.

BRACEGIRDLE, Albert. Born 2 March 1874, baptised 7 June 1874 at Manchester Cathedral. Albert was a joiner, he married Elizabeth Ellen Townley 24 August 1898 at Stowell Memorial Church, Salford. Albert died 22 July 1952 in Withington. Elizabeth Ellen was born circa 1874 in Salford and died 11 December 1933 in Sale. Albert and Elizabeth lived a 9 Era Street, Sale.

BRACEGIRDLE, Joseph. Baptised 23 June 1876 at Manchester Cathedral. Joseph was a blacksmith and wheelwright.

It is known that all theses family members had shares in the Manchester Ship Canal Company between 1898 and 1908.

BRACEGIRDLE, James. Born circa 1859 in Bollington. At the time of the 1881 census James was lodging at Didsbury Road No 8 Church View, Heaton Norris. He was a book keeper at a cotton mill at this time and was lodging with a John Goddard and his wife Bithia.

BRACEGIRDLE, Annie. Born circa 1862.

SANDIFORD, Joseph. Born circa 1867 in Manchester, at the time of the 1881 census he was an office boy. No further information is known.

SANDIFORD, Thomas. Born circa 1871 in Manchester. No further information is known.

SANDIFORD, Ellen. Born circa 1873 in Manchester. No further information is known.

SANDIFORD, Hannah. Born circa 1877 in Manchester. No further information is known.

Child of Jonathan Bracegirdle and Mary Ellen Kerfoot:-

BRACEGIRDLE, John William Kerfoot. Born 2 October 1871 in Salford. John was a machine painter (journeyman), married Esther Wolstenholme 1 September 1894 at the register office in the district of Chorlton, witnesses Richard Law and Maggie Wolstenholme (Esther's sister), they had nine children, one of which we have no information. John was actually named on his birth certificate as John William Kerfoot, no father given, he took on the name Bracegirdle at a later date but under what circumstances is unknown. On his marriage and death certificates and also on his children's birth certificates his surname was given as Bracegirdle. John William Kerfoot died aged 54 on 27 August 1926 in Salford, he and his wife Esther lived at 1 Rye Street, off Regent Street, Salford.

Peter Bracegirdle

BRACEGIRDLE, Peter. Born 22 April 1896 in Salford, baptised 6 May 1896 at St. Bartholomew's Church, Salford. Peter married Alice Ann Blake on 14 December 1918 at Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Oldfield Road, Salford, they had met at a Christmas pary in December 1916. Peter worked on the railways for 51 years, Alice worked at the Howarth Mill in Salford, they lived at 4 Haslemere Road, Flixton and had two children. Peter died 25 December 1975 in Flixton, Alice was born 8 January 1898 and died circa June 1972, also in Flixton.

William Bracegirdle, 1914

BRACEGIRDLE, William. Born 23 August 1897 in Salford, baptised 8 September 1897. During WW1 William served in the Manchester Regiment, volunteering in July 1915, he was drafted to France in November 1915 where he fought in the Battles of Loos, St. Eloi and Albert. He was later posted to Italy where he saw fighting on the Piave River and Asiago Plateau. In September 1918 William returned to France where he was badly wounded and was invalided home. He was demobilised in March 1919, he holds the 1914-15 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals. William was later a labourer at Courtaulds Chemical Company in Trafford Park, Manchester, he married Emma Lawton, born circa 1897, daughter of Richard Lawton, 3 April 1920 at Christ Church, Salford and they had one child, Edna, born 4 April 1921 in Salford, who married Harold Wynne, brother of John Cyril Wynne. The marriage witnesses were Elijah Bracegirdle and Mary Ann Jamieson. After the death of his first wife William married Edith Bell on 8 August 1936, they also had one child. The photograph on the left was taken when William was 17 and volunteered to serve in the Manchester Regiment during WWI. The photograph on the right was taken at his wedding just before his 39th birthday. William died March 1967 in Weaverham, Cheshire. William and Edith lived at 30 Harley Road, Sale, all their married life.

BRACEGIRDLE, Elijah. Born 5 October 1900 in Salford, baptised 17 October 1900 at St. Bartholomew's Church, Salford. Elijah married Mary Ann Jamieson in 1924, we do not know anything further of this relationship but Elijah married Mary E. King in 1969. Elijah died circa November 1984 in Macclesfield, Cheshire.

BRACEGIRDLE, Edith. Born circa July 1901 in Salford.

BRACEGIRDLE, Bertha. Born circa September 1904 in Salford.

BRACEGIRDLE, Emily. Born 15 December 1906 at 74 West Union Street, Salford. Emily married John Cyril Wynne on 28 December 1929 at Christ Church, Salford, marriage witnesses were Ernest Bracegirdle and Elizabeth Ann Wynne. John Cyril who was a brass moulder was born 7 September 1905 in Prestwich, Manchester, he had a brother Harold born circa 1917. John's father was Joseph Wynne. John Cyril and Emily had one child.

BRACEGIRDLE, Ernest. Born 15 February 1911 in Salford. Ernest married Annie Freeman circa September 1937 in Salford, Annie was born circa 1913. At one time Ernest and Annie had a public house in Salford (possibly the King William's Arms), which was not too far from Salford Docks, later they had an off licence in the Cheetham Hill area of Manchester. Ernest died circa August 1988 in Manchester. Annie died 11 August 2005 in Manchester.
