E-mail that was sent to Jack Hammond by Frank Frank Hulse, a long time friend and formor shipmate of Joe's. Jack wanted to know the names of Frank's Daughters.Jack, my daughter's name is Ellen Nelson and the granddaughter's name is Kaynie. I have two other daughters. The second one is Kathleen who lives in Topeka KS and then Marianne who lives in Layton UT, close by us. I don't know how much of the story you know about Joe and my girls so I'll tell you a little. They have known each other for about 38 years.
Michiko was always known to them as Connie. She went by Connie for many years, then for some reason she changed it to her Japanese name. Well about 8 to 10 years ago when we were in Allyn WA ( Ellen lived there then) for a little get-together, Joe and Connie were also there. Joe called us to attention and said there was something he wanted to say.
He told the girl's that he didn't have any daughters and he didn't know why, but if he did , he would want them to be just like my daughters. They have claimed that honor since.
They sent some flowers for his funeral with a card that said "from your daughters". Maybe some people were wondering what was going on but now at least you know.Frank Hulse, a long time friend

He donated one for the Camano Island Senior center every year.
Joe let us cut ours from there also for the past two years,
and also for two of our children, beautiful trees.
