The Saturday Tutoring Program Recognized at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast

The organizers of Cleveland's twelfth annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Breakfast chose The Saturday Tutoring Program as their 2012 Community Donation Recipient. The donations are given to organizations that work to improve the quality of life, especially for children.

Group at MLK BreakfastDuring the breakfast, the director of the tutoring program, Ms. Linda Wilson, received the “In the Footsteps of Dr. King” award, which honors an adult whose work in and commitment to Greater Cleveland brings us closer to Dr. King's ideal of “The Beloved Community.” Mr. Eric Gordon, the CEO of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, was on hand to present the award to Ms. Wilson personally.

During Ms. Wilson's acceptance speech, she thanked the Church of the Covenant for its twenty-two years as the program's site and financial supporter. She thanked the tutors who have volunteered to devote two hours of undivided attention to Greater Cleveland's students on Saturday mornings. While highlighting the talented students who have come to the program, she also encouraged the attendees to join the group because they all “know more than a 5th grader!”

Other highlights of the breakfast included the presentation of scholarships and awards to students in grades 1-12, and a keynote address delivered by The Honorable Justice Yvette McGee Brown of the Ohio Supreme Court. The event was held on January 16, 2012, at the Marriott Hotel on Public Square.
