Frequently-Asked Questions For Students & Families
Q1: I would like to bring my child in for tutoring. How do I sign them up?
A1: Please contact Linda Wilson in advance at saturdaytutoring@gmail.com or 216-421-0482 ext. 281. Ms. Wilson will provide you with necessary information ahead of time to make enrollment quick and easy. So that your first day will go smoothly, students should arrive by 9:00 a.m.
If you are over 18, you may enroll yourself through the same steps.
Q2: What grades do you work with?
A2: Students range from 1st grade to 12th grade. We also work with adults who are out of school but who are studying to pass the Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT).
Q3: What are the qualifications of the tutors?
A3: Although some of our tutors are/were teachers, most are local college students or members of the community who simply want to make a difference. All tutors receive training before they are assigned to a student.
Q4: What subjects are available for tutoring?
A4: All of the basic subjects are covered: math, science, reading, English, and social studies. For high school students, we also offer OGT, PSAT, SAT, and ACT prep. At this time, we are unable to guarantee tutors for foreign languages. If you are an adult out of school but working toward your high school diploma, we offer OGT tutoring.
Q5: What time should my children arrive?
A5: Students should arrive by 9:45 a.m. so that they have time to get checked in before tutoring starts. Students arriving late can be very disruptive to others. Students attending their first session should arrive by 9:00 a.m.
Q6: How long does a tutoring session last?
A6: Tutoring starts at 10:00 a.m. (although your children should arrive by 9:45 a.m.) and ends at noon. There is a snack break at 11:00 a.m. when students and tutors are welcome to have a doughnut and juice.
Q7: How many students will be assigned to my child's tutor?
A7: Ideally there will be one student per tutor; however, there may be times when two students will be assigned.
Q8: Will my child work with the same tutor every Saturday?
A8: Yes, when your child and the tutor attend the same Saturdays and arrive around the same time. If your child is late, we may have already assigned the tutor to another student. If the tutor is late, your student may already be assigned another tutor. With your help, we will keep your child partnered with the same tutor as often as possible.
Q9: How many tutoring sessions are there?
A9: There are approximately 10 tutoring sessions per semester. Fall semester typically begins in late September and continues until Thanksgiving. Tutoring resumes at the end of January and continues until mid-April. There is no tutoring offered during the summer.
Q10: Where are the tutoring sessions held?
A10: The sessions are held at the Church of the Covenant (11205 Euclid Avenue) across from University Hospitals. Enter the parking lot from Euclid Avenue. From the parking lot, enter the building by going down the patio stairs, outlined by large, brightly-colored signs. Those stairs and signs are directly opposite the driveway entrance.
