I'm going to come right out with this. These babys are hard to identify. Most have no markings at all. A true collector of Flinlocks will be able to get close to who made it by its "style." What that means is this. Each gunshop made their own funiture (gun parts of a sort-lockworks-trigger guards-thimbles-buttplates-various inlays-patchboxes-etc.) and each shop had their own style of making them, thus a true conisieur of Flintlocks can get pretty close. Also theses weapons were styled somewhat by the area that the manufactuer lived in. Although people would learn the trade from a gunsmith and then go out on their own, possibly to a new area, and begin producing weapons that were close to the style of their teacher, thus muddying-up the waters somewhat. Also lockworks weren't always made by the one who made the weapon. These weapons are still made today and have been constantly manufactured since they came on the market, thus an old flintlock say sixty or seventy years old, if well made and used some would appear to be much older. The recently manufactured ones are usually made in the style of a particular gunsmith or area of the flintlock era. These same problems exist with the percussion weapons but they had started marking them more by then.
