The Romanian gymnasts, coaches and judges

Saturday 29th / Sunday 30th June 2002. Park Road. Sports Centre, Liverpool, England.

During warm-ups, Cojocar took a bad fall on vault. She didnt march out and it was said she wouldnt compete. When the gymnasts were introduced, Eremia was left out! The Romanians started on vault with the British competing alternately on bars. Rosu had particularly good vaults but the others were impressive too. A deafening cheer went up after Beth Tweddle' s fantastic bar routine.

Iuliana Chindea had a nasty fall on bars landing flat on her front though coach Sandu was spotting. Leonida had an excellent routine with no one else making many mistakes. The British had difficult beam routines without many major mistakes. All this time Sabina couldn't keep still as she stretched and jumped around...but she looked up when she heard her 2000 floor music accompanying Johnson's floor exercise.

The Romanians did very well on beam-though the J.R. European beam champion Leonida took an unfortunate fall. Eremia's exercise received very loud applause.

Sabina did compete on floor-which she did very well, pleasing the crowd a lot. The juniors' choreography was excellent, and their tumbling was as usual-of a very high standard.

Romania won the title as most expected-including Belu who didn't even listen as the winning team was being announced. Sabina didn't think she was to get a medal as she competed only floor, but she had to dash to her teammates when the person giving the medals found himself with an extra one! Beth Tweddle had the highest AA score of the day, which delighted the Liverpool fans when they heard.

Afterwards, the gymnasts patiently signed dozens of autographs. Belu, Monica Rosu, Sabina Cojocar and Florica Leonida all posed for pictures with me. They were all very friendly and kind. They then left for a reception later that night.

The next day, 3 per country were to compete on each apparatus, but on vault only Rosu competed for Romania. Chindea changed the number for Rosu's vault but could barely reach the board! Rosu did excellently and took the gold.

On bars, Leonida didn't do as well as the first day, but tied with Willis for bronze behind Tweddle (9.50!!!) and Eremia who took the silver.

On beam, Sabina competed in the final-though she didnt qualify! She had an excellent routine-which including some new moves. Leonida, who also didnt qualify, competed and took the bronze. Sabina took the silver and Eremia came 1st with an excellent routine and a 9.55!

On floor, Sabina performed excellently, and then waved, smiled and blew kisses to the crowd. Rapeanu did equally as well as Sabina (literally!!) to tie for 1st place. Tweddle won the bronze. Eremia had been doing well until she put her hands down after a triple twist. After the competition-before Beam and Floor medal presentations-Belu had her repeat the triple twist several times. He let her know how angry he was-and poor Eremia ended up in floods of tears. But tears were forgotten when she received the gold medal for Beam. The gymnasts again signed lots of autographs. Sabina gave her flowers to the announcer, and Florica gave hers away also. Apart from Chindea, who didnt compete on the 2nd day, all the Romanians got at least one medal. It was good experience for this talented young team.
